Just glad Nintendo still have respect and attend E3.

So you are saying Sony has no respect because they ditch dying show for their own shows around the globe?

It's not a dying show though. Attendance has remained consistent and viewership has been up.

The question is, even if they did show up, what else are they going to announce other than PS5?

They skipped e3 2019 because all of their major releases got postponed. I'm guessing (hopefully not) they do not have enough games to announce along with the PS5 as TLOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima are both releasing close to e3 and there is no point in promoting them in the event. Now all we have to do it wait for the PS events and see what they reveal.

Honestly, I don't get this. What good comes from not showing your stuff while the world is focused on your industry? Even if E3 isn't as central as it used to be, it's still better than some random Thursday in August or whatever.

Now that Sony's imitating the Nintendo Direct with their whole State of Play, it's not like they have to waste money on awkward presentations anymore.

Remember the year Nintendo said they wouldn’t do conferences anymore?

Nintendo fans said the same damn thing.

Last year there were reports from ESA employees about confusion and uncertainty of E3's future after 2021, due to restructuring within the organisation and the companies that own ESA, among other things. Plans for ESA's visions of E3 2020 leaked as well.

I talked about this a few days ago in the other thread. Sony having disagreements with ESA's new directions was being talked about about last year.
But I don't think it was talked about here, because whenever I read comments from people about Sony skipping last year, the common reply was "They're skipping because it's a transitional year and they have nothing to show."

But they and other platform holders have been through tons of transitional years before. That was probably not the reason.

The fact that they can save a lot of money while reaching a similar audience probably started looking more and more reasonable around that time.

Jason Schreier said it was half-empty last year.

But even if it was jam packed full, attendance and viewers may very well not be enough to cover the costs of putting on the event.
The leaked 2020 brainstorming plans to have 10,000 more fans attend, among other things, suggests they may be considering drastic changes.

Tsk tsk tsk. Nah.

Sony simply doesn’t respect its fans anymore. Especially NA fans.

Can’t be anything else.

Wow. I didn't see this coming at all. Well, I guess E3 is pretty much dead then. On the bright side we might get a full PS5 reveal before E3 happens. We did with PS4, so there that.

Now hold on just a minute: there's still Microsoft, Nintendo, and plenty of third parties.

How could it have been empty last year? Wasn't attendance just slightly down compared to 2018. Maybe it was empty the time he was there or something.

Edit: MS had all their game in their own Ms theater a block away from the main E3 building so a lot of people could have been split between both buildings.  You needed E3 passes for the MS theater so that was probably counted as attendees.

“We have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year,” a spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz."

So rumor has it Sony and ESA are not getting along. Whatever Sony wanted to do was not in line with what the ESA wanted.

Iirc there were E3 2020 leaks that the ESA is planning to turn E3 to more of a fan event like Gamescom. Sony might have disagreed with that.

From what I have read, it's the exact opposite.  It seems like there is a battle behind the scenes as to what E3 should become, or what it should remain.  Sony wanted it to become more of a fan celebration, similar to Comic-Con/Gamescon, where you would have 100K-200K+ attending.  Others wish for it to remain like it is now, mostly gaming press and insiders, where you have maybe 60K-70K attendees.  The ~15K tickets they started giving out to the public in 2017 was probably a compromise.  I guess it was too little too late.

@OP

It's funny to see people who talk about streaming using the internet as a big part of the future, yet when it comes to E3, act like we are still living in the 90s.  This is the internet age.  It doesn't matter where Sony drops the info and when, PS5 info will spread like wildfire through the internet.  Just look at the Wired articles and the 5.2M likes on Instagram in just two days, just for a stinking logo, as proof.  People are ready for the PS5.
