Forums - Sony Discussion - Outlandish Rumor: Sony is in talks to purchase Zenimax and all owned studios

Crazy rumor coming out of Reddit today. Most likely utter nonsense, but I figured I'd post it anyway:

Rumor is that Sony is in talks to purchase Zenimax, the parent company that owns Bethesda Game Studios (Fallout/Elder Scrolls/Starfield), Arkane (Dishonored/Prey reboot/Deathloop), id (Doom/Quake/Rage), Tango Gameworks (The Evil Within/Ghostwire Tokyo), Machine Games (Wolfenstein), Zenimax Online (Elder Scrolls Online), and Roundhouse (original Prey). According to the same leaker, Bethesda shut down Starfield 3 months ago and is focusing entirely on Elder Scrolls 6 now instead, with a planned release in 2022, with Fallout remakes planned for 2021:

Deal would be finalized by the end of January/early February.

Star field was canned 3 months ago, all hands on deck for TES 6 for a 2022 release date. Fallout remakes next year.

Can give more details soon.

A similar rumor was reported on about 2 months ago by Tim from Kinda Funny Games apparently.

This seems highly unlikely to me. Zenimax is worth several billion dollars for starters.

Thats waaay to big a buy isnt it?

That said, I'd love to see Sony take over Bethesda Game Studios.

Sometimes new management is all thats needed, to get things back on track,
and I suspect Bethesda is one of those companys that could benefit from it.

Elder Scrolls Online + Fallout 76 = garbage.

Bethasda has lost its way.

Its too focused on all the wrong things, way to focused on penny pinching, and exploiting consumers.
Sony takeing over, and new engine + a belief in single player focused gameing, and not screwing over consumers.
Suddenly Elderscrolls is back and Fallout too, as their ment to be.

No. Just no. There is absolutely no value for Sony in doing that.

Agreed. If anybody were to buy them, MS would make alot more sense than Sony. A huge portion of Bethesda's fanbase is on PC, and MS puts all of their games on PC from day one now. Microsoft also has a much better relationship with Bethesda, historically speaking. But I highly doubt that anyone is buying Zenimax, they are just too expensive.

Am I the only one that feels like "management change" for Bethesda can only be a good thing?

At some point, things are just so bad, any change is good.
Sony would be a welcome change imo.

Bethesda didn't make Elder Scrolls Online, that is Zenimax Online Studios. Bethesda only made Fallout 76, and that was just a one-off project for them, their main focus now is on new singleplayer sci-fi IP Starfield, with early development work on Elder Scrolls 6 happening as well.

This will be an absolutely insane purchase that dwarfs anything Microsoft has done recently. I think this would actually start a buying third party war between Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony that likes it which would have never seen. Part of me wants it to happen just to see how much the chaos would look like haha

Not even Microsoft imo.
They did buy 1 year exclusivity for Oblivion but that was not worth the cost, as they did not do it again for Skyrim.

Overall all IPs that are owned by Zenimax are coming to all platforms already and I don't think they are system sellers so buying Zenimax itself is little gain for huge cost. They had a equity of $2.5 billion in 2016. Bethesda is only one part of it. Zenimax also owns id software, Arkane Studios, Tango Gameworks and others.
