What console is next? Is it the Nintendo Wii?

Yep; 2.1 million more to go til Switch passes Wii.

Should be able to reach it early next year.

Not long before it outsells Wii there. Which was 12 million I think.

I don't know why japaneses stopped caring about home consoles. They are missing some great games and amazing experiences.

It's not true. Japanese stopped caring sony home console, besides all BIG support of all Japanese Third party. All bet against Nintendo Switch. PS4 have all big japanese guns and will suffer to sell 10 millions LTD.

Don't really care about Nintendo home consoles, either. The Wii did just ~2M more than the PS3.

That's pretty low to have Switch compete against last gen.

Not only that, but to make it more specific to make it seem like Switch has the upper hand. Like why compare just in Japan and not as a whole?

What a poor writer at Nintendo Life.

Because the milestone happened in Japan, not the rest of the world. When it inevitably does happen in the rest of the world, then they'll report it just like how switch crossing Xbone ww will be reported and it crossing SNES will be reported and when it crosses 3ds and Wii, it'll be reported. It's main competitor right now is PS4 and while it looks like switch will break the double helix it formed with PS4 by selling amazingly this holiday, Sony consoles generally have longer legs but then again Ninty handhelds do as well and since switch is the only Ninty console this time, it might mean switch has better legs than the home consoles. That's why the battle is so exciting

The Switch been beat the PS3 over there. Why is this news?!

Not even three years of selling Switch are beating more than seven years worth of PS3 sales. I would say this is news worthy.

I didn't mean that in a negative stance. I just thought the PS3 sales over there wasn't really a big milestone hurdle. I guess when you put it the way you did, I can  understand it.

Took longer than what I thought it would, PS3 and PS4 dropped majorly compared to PS2 sales in Japan.

Speaking of PS2, next week NSW will pass it launches aligned.

It should pass PS2 next week and by the end of the year have close to a 500k lead

This is a 1:1 comparison because they both launched in the first week of March.

Yep I don't think at end of life PS2 would have a chance to stay ahead of Switch in Japan. The portable side of it is much looked after in Japan. But yes their comparison makes much more sense than to PS3 or PS4.

Still as said, this new or thread isn't about bragging that Switch passed both, but just a milestone pointing that at this moment Switch have passed that milestone. We knew PS4 would pass 100M and perhaps even 120M, still we celebrated a lot of 10, 25, etc milestones.

Exactly, milestones are milestones and deserve a little celebration. That you set them in relation to expectations is a different thing. And that can be problematic in itself. I mean we can look at a future console, say PS5, and one expects 10M and another 15M and one maybe even 20M (in Japan). Depending on these expectations the same milestone can be look good or lame.

I can't think of a reason not to celebrate something that makes people happy.

Sure we may put some context, not always needed and sometimes used to downplay, but still 10M is a good number in Japan for Switch and it could double that before the end of its tenure.

So the PS2 sold like 23m in Japan and the 3DS 24.5m. If the Switch has a long life like the PS2 or 3DS did, then it will surely match them.

This is a milestone. But I don't think we expect Switch to be reaching any hugely impressive milestone when it's been out less than 3 years in the market. Maybe outselling XB1 (worldwide) will be impressive when it happens. That is about it. Give the Switch a few more years, and then it will be hitting the truly impressive milestones.
