Xbox One vs PlayStation 3 in the US – VGChartz Gap Charts – October 2019

XOne Vs. PS3 US:

Gap change in latest month: 74,900 – PS3

Gap change over last 12 months: 326,713 – PS3

Total Lead: 3,735,043 - XOne

XOne Total Sales: 25,936,903

PS3 Total Sales: 22,201,860

Xbone's basically guaranteed to win this one, as I think PS3 only made it to a little over 26 million total. Still, the fact they're this close shows how much ground Xbox lost this gen, even in its home territory, only beating out last gen's third place by a few million.

Regarding new charts we could do, have we done PS4 vs Wii in Japan, 360 vs PS4 in NA, or Switch vs PSP in Japan yet?

PS4 Vs. X360 US:

Gap change in latest month: 206,075 – X360

Gap change over last 12 months: 2,671,263 – X360

Total Lead: 1,525,064 – PS4

X360 Total Sales: 28,823,923

PS4 Total Sales: 30,348,987

Very interesting, I wasn't aware 360 was closing the gap, much less by 2.6 million in the last year.

Should be a fascinating race to watch from this point on; the platform totals page has Xbox 360 at 49 million in NA, not sure how much of that is in the US though.

EDIT: Nvm just read the article; "The Xbox 360 sold 45.14 million units lifetime in the US. The PlayStation 4 needs to sell another 14.79 million units to surpass the Xbox 360 in the US."

This holiday season will be a bloodbath

360 did 3.4 million in Nov+Dec 2011 NPD while PS4 will probably be half of that (~2.3m last year).

Yeah the gap is going to shrink fast in November and December. PS4 sales are continuing the downward trend year-over-year. The Kinect did an amazing job in extending the lifespan of the Xbox 360, while it hurt sales for the Xbox One.

Kinect could have been fine on Xbox One but it was handled incredibly poorly.

Kinect launched at $149 standalone or $299 for 360+Kinect in Nov 2010 and by holiday 2011 these had deals for $99/$199.

Kinect sold 24 million in a little over 2 years, these people who purchased a Kinect/Kinect bundle for $99-299 from Nov 2010-Feb 2013 were not the same demographic to buy a $499 console.

It was too soon and too expensive for the Kinect audience to move on.

Switch Vs. 3DS Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 470,654 – 3DS

Gap change over last 12 months: 959,537 – 3DS

Total Lead: 3,149,900 - Wii

Switch Total Sales: 9,902,896

3DS Total Sales: 13,052,796

This holiday season and next year should see Switch start closing the gap.

Holiday 2013 was pretty weak for 3DS in Japan and 2014 saw sales drop by 35% YoY.

Was the 3DS as front-heavy in Japan as it was worldwide in terms of sales?

Alrighty, so while it may look like a curbstomp for 3DS at this stage, Switch has a shot at catching up in the long run.

So would PSP vs Switch in Japan be a chart worth doing? PSP sold only a few million less than 3DS lifetime there.
