Forums - Gaming Discussion - Just picked up an old CRT TV and holy moly this is a gamechanger

The last years I used a CRT was to play 360.

I'm not sure if it reduced latency, but games did look polished on it. Many games surprisingly even supported 4:3 ratio.

Yep, still have one with Wii hooked up to it.
These days there are shaders for emulators that are getting close to real thing, but nothing really manages to replace old CRT.

I would like to have one... but sadly, in the flat I share with other people I don't have space for such a device. Maybe when I have my own house...

I have this Akai 81cm CRT - it weights about 40kg but man is it good. I use it for everything pre gamecube.....

Also still got a CRT screen for my old consoles

That's why the Mini SNES exists.

I prefer the real thing. ;)

That's naughty :o

Haha

This is funny timing. I'm currently moving in with my girlfriend, and she wants me to ditch my CRT. I attempted to explain its usefulness for old-school games, particularly light gun games.

Maybe I'll show her this thread

Digital Foundry did an article about this a while back. Made me envious of one of those Sony FW900 monitors.

Now, I know cost and weight were the main factors on the CRT -> LCD transition, but on retrospect it seems a bit mind boggling people took at face value that those 768p LCDs you can't even look sideways, with fixed resolutions and framerates, were the next big thing.

I think the main driver was screen size.  CRT was limited to 36 inches (or so) while when LCD first launched 42+ inches were common.  Screen size, IMHO, drove adoption of LCD over CRT.

Meh. I don't miss my CRT. Heavy as fuck and the image wasn't as good. Don't really see a difference in input lag, especially when using Game Mode on my 55 incher. And if I'm playing old school games on it, I do it with emulation, so it's nice and clear.
