The gap went back to "normal" too quickly after the Lite's launch tho. New taxes and typhoons really annoy buyers. Who knows what might happen next week.
Worth noting it didnt affect Vita sales in Japan.

I've been thinking about this, and here are the conclusions that I've come to.

1) It's mostly Europe where the PS4 is still going strong.  Japan and NA sales have taken a noticeable dip this year, like they always do in the sixth year.

2) Sony's presence has grown in some parts of Europe but not others.  If you look at the numbers for UK, France and Germany, you'll see that total hardware PS + XB sales are about the same in the UK and France as they were last generation.  However in Germany sales have grown significantly.  There are plenty of other countries in Europe where we don't have specific sales data, so it is hard to say where Sony has grown and where it hasn't.

My guess would be that Sony's presence has grown the most in central and eastern Europe.  Western Europe has had access to some sort of Playstation for a long time.  In central and eastern Europe, Playstation probably still has plenty of room to grow.  I mean, I can't think of a significant Polish developer before CD Projekt Red.  Just having their games available on console can sell more PS4's in Poland.  But I also suspect Sony is making an intentional push to expand further into certain European countries where there is definitely room for the market to grow.  Playstation sales numbers can stay high as long as Sony keeps expanding.

It still has tons of quality software comeing in the next 1,5 years, on pair with what the Switch is getting.
Playstation tend to go out in style... their software isnt front loaded (like xbox or nintendo sometimes is).

Plus I'd argue it still has the overall strongest game library of the 3 systems.
If your just getting a console now, the PS4 isnt a bad buy.

Well I would say give it another 18months in Europe and the gap will keep growing between PS4 and X1.

Currently it's 3.5:1 (UK 1.33:1 Fr 3,6:1), last gen it was 1.33:1 (UK 0,64:1, Fr 1.4:1)...

PS4 have grow its presence in all countries in Europe, some cases massively. And the more one sided the market is in a place less likely will there be owners of both consoles.

Nintendo sold just over 8 million Switch consoles in November and December 2018, while Microsoft sold just over 3 million Xbox One consoles. Switch sales will be up this holiday season, while Xbox One sales will be down. It is almost certain the Switch will surpass the Xbox One this year. 

We could be looking at something like ~10 million for Switch and ~2.5 million for Xbox One in Nov+Dec.

It depends on two key factors.

1: How many Switch and Switch Lites Nintendo can ship to meet the demand. $199 for the Switch Lite will put it more in the price range of parents more willing to buy one for their kids. 

2: How low is Microsoft willing to go for Xbox One deals this holiday season. Rumors are showing Xbox One S for as low as $149. Microsoft previously said the All-Digital Edition would remain $50 below the standard Xbox One S, so could mean the digital edition available for as low as $99.

Rumors are for the digital edition at $149, not the standard S model.

It was probably more to do with the tax hike.

The typhoon only got here on the 12th, so it would've only affected 1 day of the week, and only in the Toyko area. The previous week felt the effects of the hike, but also would have included the last 2 days of the previous tax rate, with everybody panic shopping before tax went up, so we're only really seeing the full effect of it in this week.

The first full week of the new taxes definitely had an effect too, but I think the typhoon was also significant; the Tokyo area has a bigger population than a lot of whole countries and close to 10% of Japan's people live there, plus it hit on the weekend which is when a lot of buying usually takes place.

Next week will likely also be affected; I doubt buying gaming systems will be foremost on people's minds during a crisis, most shops probably won't even be open.
