Forums - Sales Discussion - VGChartz Gap Charts September 2019 Discussion Thread

Gap Charts left to do for this month include:

  • PS4 vs Wii - I'm going to continue this until the PS4 surpasses the Wii lifetime
  • PS4 vs Xbox One in the US
  • Switch vs PS4 in the US
  • Xbox One vs Xbox 360 in the US
  • Switch vs 3DS and Wii U in the US
  • PlayStation 4 vs Xbox 360 in the US
  • PS4 vs PS3 in Japan
  • Switch vs PS4 in Japan - I will drop this one soon
  • Switch vs Wii in Japan

I'd like to do charts comparing to older consoles like the PS2, PS1, etc, but we don't have weekly sales data for anything older than the 7th generation (DS, PSP, 360, PS3, Wii).

Could you do a Switch vs. PS4 + Vita?  Preferably one for Japan and one globally.

How about Switch vs PSP?

The latter sold better than the 3DS after all.

I had no idea the X1 was ahead of the 360 for a while.
Did the 360 have a generally slow start, or was the X1 doing very well in the US until recently?

Xbox One is really running out of gas this year; its the tortoise and the hare.

To second a request from the article on 360 vs Xbone, how about a gap chart for PS3 vs Xbone in the US?

That should be a more interesting article. I can add that to the list and have it posted later on for the September 2019 articles. I have several US and Japan articles, but none for Europe (or UK or France or Germany). I am trying to think of any possibly good Gap Charts. Any ideas?

Cool. :) As ever, if I can think of any I'll post them here.

You can read the complete Article #13 and Analysis here:

PS4 vs PS3 in Japan – VGChartz Gap Charts – September 2019

PS4 Vs. PS3 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 29,947 – PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: 194,780 – PS3

Total Lead: 141,190 – PS4

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 8,430,306

PlayStation 3 Total Sales: 8,289,116

PS3 is catching up; PS4 sales have dropped off to sustained sub-10k levels in Japan by now, I'm no longer confident PS4 can pass PS3's lifetime Japanese total.

I like data, but I hate limited data. It's like the Box Office, who cares what a movie did in the U.S. Market? I'm an American, and the only thing that matters to me are two things:

1) Global Numbers

2) Numbers adjusted for inflation

Regarding this thread, I'd really love more of a global look at these comparisons, because while somebody may be doing better or worse in the U.S. generation over generation, if we took Japan and Europe into consideration it may not appear that way.

Is there a reason why this specific gap chart is not launch-aligned like most others?

That wouldn't exactly be a close comparison which is sorta the idea with these. But you already knew that :)

I'm sure trunk will make one for you though. Should be quick enough.

Hopefully with Switch having asserted its dominance in the land of the rising sun, Japanese publishers/developers will start to support it a bit better.

It takes time to develop games, but I am sure more will support it going forward.

True, it does take time, but it's been obvious for a long time now that Switch would dominate Japan so games for it should've started development a while back.
