Between Halo 4 and Gears. The only thing 343 did better than Bungie were the impressive visuals.

I do agree for the most part. Halo 5 is the most fun I've had in Halo multiplayer in a long time. At least I loved the Warzone game modes.

Their one weak point is story, which makes sense when you consider they went with a comic book writer for H5 instead of one of the veterans.

Outside of the Big Four I mentioned, some other impressive ones worth mentioning for me are Witcher 2, Crysis 3, and Rage.

The 360 was an absolute beast for hardware that came out in 2005, it's insane how well it held its own for so many years graphically.

Witcher 2 was not well optimized. It had some of the worst texture pop in even when installed and it always looked pixelated probably due to lack of filtering. However, X1X give a 4K boost and fixes texture problems.

All the Crysis games had impressive assets, but textures could be muddy, poor draw distance and frame rate were issues. DF did a video on all three and its kinda jarring.

Rage was a mixed bag visually. Like texture pop in, character models seemed kinda dated, the world in general wasnt that impressive to look at. However, it looked good for a 60 fps game.

Some other games that I think aged well visually are Resident Evil 5 and 6. Dead Space games and Mass Effect games. All of those games still look good even if they can be nitpicked.

I dunno... On release I thought Mass Effect 3 looked like an ugly duckling with low-res muddy textures and popin.

Mass Effect 1 looked amazing comparatively to other titles at the time though... Albeit the loading times was the Achilles heels.
And Mass Effect 2 stepped it up over even that... But by the time the third entry came along, Unreal Engine 3 was getting very long in the tooth.

I recall ME3 being visually at par with previous games. The environments might have been compromised given they were larger from my memory. It didn't feel like the visuals between ME1 and ME3 changed much, so I felt bored of the presentation. I don't feel UE3 is the problem per se.

ME1 had serious pop in issues and frame rate problems, that was more significant than the load time.

I recall in the first building some "rubble" that looked like it could belong in the 5th gen of gaming console, it was a blurry low resolution mess, some of the sky boxes were lower resolution too.

I mean, Mass Effect 3 was on par with the previous entries visually, but it also released much later, the bar needed to be set higher... Remember Mass Effect 3 dropped around the same time as games like Halo 4, FarCry 3, Assassins Creed 3, Hitman Absolution, Max Payne 3, Battlefield 3, Skyrim, Gears 3 which all pushed the visuals out. - Especially Halo 4 and Battlefield 3.

I still thought Witcher 2 looked impressive in spite of its issues, especially given the base game was built for PC hardware way more powerful than 360.

Same with Rage, it did have imperfections, but I thought it looked awesome overall at 60fps.

Resident Evil 5 did really wow me back in 2009, and I feel like it has aged very well because of its art style.

Maybe you saw things I missed or didn't pay attention to in ME3. But overall it had impressive visuals for the hardware. The graphics in ME games didn't change much between releases from my memory, its more like they optimized the performance and made larger environments. In comparison other IPs were being more ambitious with tweaking or improving the presentation.

On a sidenote, Bioshock deserve a mention. Bioshock might be the oldest game I can think of that remains visually stunning. The game almost seems ageless, the core gameplay still feels great, the great use of effects and atmosphere compensate for assets that haven't aged as well.

Witcher 2 looks okay, especially if you're playing on X1 BC which fixes the jarring textures issues.

Honestly, I wasn't that impressed by Witcher 2 on 360. Its a linear game and by the time it released there were plenty of large scale games on 360 that were more visually polished than that port. I just appreciated they did the port and I bought it at release, although I didn't much care for it.

At the time Rage released I didn't really appreciate 60 fps like I do now, so I didn't consider it looks less impressive than other games because of the frame rate. I remember at the time I bought into the hype of this game not reusing any textures, but the end product was a game with average (sometimes muddy) textures and texture pop in issues. In the end it was a game hyped for visuals that just seemed average to me.

If we're gonna praise games for 60 fps, I would argue CoD games deserve a mention. Pretty much everything from MW2 to Advanced Warfare.

In regard to RE5. I was amazed how good the effects were and how many character models it could have on screen at once. Visuals that good were generally cinematics so it wowed me at the time.

This DF video for example shows how well this engine could handle complex, fast moving in game cutscenes, many camera changes without having jarring pop in. Even games on modern hardware struggle to accomplish this.

MW2/MW3/BO/BO2 looked impressive, I concur, but not Advanced Warfare IMO, it suffered from looking noticeably downgraded as a result of being built for PS4/Xbone then chopped down, had a lot of rather poor textures and shadows.

I just edited my previous post with some thoughts on RE5.

I feel the AW campaign was more ambitious than previous games technically, a lot more happening given its futuristic and heavy action environment. So there may have been compromise on assets yet maintained an impressive frame rate even now.

I think many of the cross gen games were attempting to use more advanced lighting effects but lacked the power. So you ended up with a downgraded variation and more pixelated shadows. I've mentioned Destiny before because it had impressive 8th gen-ish lighting, but low res shadows.
