As pretty as it is on stronger platforms, I was always under the impression Witcher 3 is considered great mostly thanks to its gameplay and story rather than its graphics.

Anyway, I guess I'll find out soon enough; EB Games opens in 55 minutes, so I'm about to wander on down and pick up my copy.

I wouldn't say overall grand story per se, more of a lot of smaller storylines that are really excellent. And the world building is excellent as well.
As for gameplay, there are plenty of people that don't like it much, but I find it quite good and its combat very satisfactory, if you know what you're doing.

On the other hand, I could go on for hours what's no so good about it (from RPG perspective), but overall it's quite solid experience, though massively overhyped (like some other games in this fictive open-world "genre").

That's fair enough. I think it's a game I'll likely really enjoy, having watched a lot of gameplay. (And having thoroughly enjoyed Witcher 2)

I just got home with my copy; will fire it up after breakfast and post impressions.

Alrighty, played through the first hour.

It's not pretty. But we already knew it wouldn't be.

The important thing is, its still very playable; not one of those janky ports where the whole experience just seems laggy, buggy and slipshod. Characters still feel about as responsive as you'd expect of a typical 30fps adventure game, enemy tells and relevant objects are still readable in spite of the lower resolution, there's never the sense that the technical cutbacks get in the way of playing it, basically.

It is exactly what it says on the box, The Witcher 3, complete with all the DLC, sure... it has lower quality assets than the PS4 but again, if that is a shock to anyone they need a smack, also if it's the best assets you want while playing your games.... just gonna put it out there guys, if you are playing this on a PS4 (be that PS4 base model or Ps4 pro) then you are playing it in a way that a person running the game on a 1080 literally looks upon like you are doing to the Switch port, a 30fps mess.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kQKp4gw8nk

That left side, the 1060, I mean you're talking about a GPU 1 generation out of date and 5 steps down from the 1080TI even... and it's pushing over 50fps on ultra settings. So aye, if you're feeling high and mighty because you played this on the medium or so settings of the ps4 version @30fps, aye, well done, you have the more powerful potato compared to the portable potato in relative terms of actually playing this at anywhere near the settings it can be played if you want the "best" experience, from a graphics point of view.

Just where that 1060 which chucks this out at 1080/ultra and close to 60fps is effectively half the power of the highest end of GPU's now, https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1060-3GB-vs-Nvidia-RTX-2080-Ti/3646vs4027 so yeee... you take a PCMR GPU, break it in half and it would play the game twice as well as a ps4 would, just... keep that in mind before you say "this looks too blurry to be playable for me!" to PCMR you live in a world of blur! Blissful blurry ignorance!

If you have an insane gaming laptop with a battery which can maintain a run of this game @ultra/60while on the bog then huzzah for you, you may look down on the Switch owners playing this portably, however, I'm going to guess that said laptop would not come at a cost of $200 which the Lite can be bought for which can run this game @low/30

Now 2 hours in, the funny thing about this game is that while it often looks quite muddy, there are also moments where the game's aesthetic beauty shrines through in spite of its technical limitations, such as sun filtering through the leaves or a forest gently swaying in moonlight.

There's an adjustment period too; the longer I played, the less I noticed the low resolution and reduced assets.

Have yet to run into any bugs or serious performance issues.

It seems like it's exactly what was promised and what I expected. A limited, yet faithful recreation of the game on a platform that can only stretch so far when it comes to technology and power. Considering those limitation this is a genuinely impressive achievement, but that also means It's only really worth anything for people who don't have any other platforms to play the game on, unless you absolutely must play it on the go. I couldn't care less about playing the game on a handheld system, so it's value is lost on me, but I can understand that for others that's a big selling point.

Its a miracle that this is even possible on a switch considering how terrible the system specs are for a console released in 2017.

Its only optional to buy the game. Just stop complaining.

It is a portable console that fits in a (large) pocket.  Not sure what kind of specs people were expecting.  Games look and run great on the Switch.  It isn't a giant dedicated home console.
