Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is 2001 the best year ever for gaming

I was just looking up lists of notable games that came out every year since 2000. 2001 is just insane with big releases.

Halo

GTA 3

Pro skater 3

MGS 2

Gran turismo 3 a spec

DMC

Advance wars

Final fantasy X

SSB Melee

Conkers bad furday

Golden Sun

Twisted Metal black

Ico

Jak and Daxter

Civilization 3

Shemue 2

Max Payne

Pikmin

Silent hill 2

Super monkey ball

That is one legendary list of games. There were even more I didn't bother listing.

Personally I'll take 2010.

Mario Galaxy 2, Bayonetta, Mass Effect 2, Halo Reach, Vanquish, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Monster Hunter Tri, (In the West) Sin & Punishment Star Successor, Bioshock 2...

Bet with Liquidlaser: I say PS5 and Xbox Series will sell more than 56 million combined by the end of 2023.

Either 1998:
Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid, Half-Life, Resident Evil 2, Tekken 3, Crash 3, Pokemon Yellow, F-Zero X, Spyro the Dragon, Banjo-Kazooie, Sonic Adventure (in Japan)...

Or 2007:
Super Mario Galaxy, Bioshock, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Uncharted, Metroid Prime 3, Pokemon Diamond/Pearl (Overseas), Super Paper Mario, Team Fortress 2, Assassin's Creed, The WItcher...

Edit: 2017 is also a very strong contender:
Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Persona 5, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Nier: Automata, Cuphead, Splatoon 2, Resident Evil 7, Tekken 7, Metroid: Samus Returns, Dragon Quest XI (in Japan), Sonic Mania...

Hardware Comparison Threads:

PlayStation 4/Xbox One/Nintendo Switch: 2019 vs. 2020
(https://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread/241660/ps4xbons-2019-vs-2020/1/)

There's definitely sentimentality in this year in gaming for me as it was basically the year I was finally able to purchase my own games and picked what I wanted after buying GameCube at launch - vs just having my dad come home with a game of his choosing every month or so or getting games as gifts from like '90-2000.

As is the case with rock music, the early 2000s was my golden era in some ways, at least second to the early 90s (Mario 3, Turtles in Time, Mario RPG, Secret of Mana, etc).

Loved SSBM, Conker, Tony Hawk 3, Golden Sun, Halo, Advance Wars, Pikmin, Monkey Ball. Plus I was really getting into PC gaming around this time and stuff like Everquest (with the first few DLCs), Roller Coaster Tycoon, Counter Strike. And was getting catching up on Dreamcast stuff like Grandia II, Crazy Taxi, Chu Chu Rocket, Power Stone 2, etc.. Was the first time I was really broadening my gaming horizons beyond just NES/Super NES/N64. Then the following year there was Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, and other gems.

I think I'll have to pick up FFX as my first FF game and recapture some of that 2001 gaming magic. I remember watching my friend play it when I'd come over and loving the atmosphere, and Blitz Ball looked like a good time.

Probably not. I would say yes, but FF10 (my favourite game of all time) was a 2002 game for me (I'm European) and without that I don't think 2001 is good enough for me to consider it the best.

Bet Shiken that COD would outsell Battlefield in 2018. http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=8749702

Id say 1998 with some of the very best games ever made that not only go down as legendary but also defined genres.
Zelda Ocarina of Time, Half Life, Banjo Kazooie, Metal Gear Solid just to name a few.

2020!! Why ? The Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Persona 5 Royal = 100 % legendary Games.
In the same Year (the first quarter) are coming: Cyperpunk, Yakuza-Collection, DBZ-RPG, Ni-Oh2. And then: Tales of Arises, Granblue Fantasy Versus, Yakuza 7, many new big Games-Trailer for the Future ect

The Year with Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and GTA San Andreas was fantastic too.

Game of the Year 2020: Ghost of Tsushima, Persona 5 Royal or The Last of Us 2 ?!

1987 was the best year for gaming in North America at least. That was the year that NES was actually released nation wide. It also had a very solid list of titles at that point like Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid. The home console market went from completely dead to getting several of the best IP ever created all in the same year.

1987 - for North America it's no contest.

2017 for me.. Persona 5, Horizon Zero Dawn, Breath of the Wild, Nier and Mario Odyssey. I love all these games more than anything that came out since 2018.

2001 and 1998 are constantly battling for "best year ever" in my head.
