Forums - Gaming Discussion - Control drops to 10fps on base consoles (DF)

Quantum Break had occasional performance issues but that's something else.

Does this include Xbox an PS Slim versions or just launch consoles?

Both games are using the same engine, which also happens to favor their own house made "reconstructing" technique, which does come with a performance impact.

This easily reminds me of RAGE 1 using megatextures, which came with all sorts of issues. I really wish devs would stop trying to invent new ways to show you an image, that inevitably ends up hindering how it's displayed in the first place.

PC performance is also in the crapper as well, since even the RTX 2080ti has to turn down settings and also having to rely on DLSS, just to stay roughly at 60.

Dump the engine, it's clearly not perfect and it's clearly not working well with all sorts of hw out there, consoles included.

Yeah I can't see how their QA guys looked at this and said "yeah this is good enough, ship it". Especially when far more people own the base systems than the enhanced ones.

19:10 in that video on the base PS4 version of it :( that has to be patched.

Compare what that looks like to Detroit on the same hardware

That version of Control works so poorly at points there that if you bought a PS4 and that was the first game you got you would seriously question the abilities of the console to deliver that level of graphics, which is a real shame from Remedy.

That's because Detriot isn't using the same engine as Remedy is with Control, which uses a reconstruction technique, that ends up demanding more.

Read this:

https://www.mmorpg.com/editorials/control-a-ray-tracing-masterpiece-and-triumph-of-unrelenting-pc-power-1000013917

Then this on QB:

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2016-quantum-break-tech-analysis

Only search for the reconstruction technique, and you'll see the pattern.

Remedy just need to dump the engine and start from scratch. I know someone can tell me that they can "edit" out that flaw in their engine, but I don't trust any dev to completely remove it, as id still focuses on megatextures since RAGE 1, which now even exist in DOOM 16 and even Wolfenstein TNO, TNC and Youngblood, and of course we know bethesda just slaps a new coat of paint on their ancient engine. Better to start over than to trust someone wanting to hold onto a flawed concept.

The Xbox One is the S version. No clarification on PS4 but as far as I'm ware it didn't get the performance bump in the slim that the Xbone did so it should perform identically.

Even the Pro struggles to maintain 30fps at 1080p, with only Xbone X providing a smooth ride, which of the four has the smallest install base.

That's inexcusable. Makes a good case of legislation that forces devs/publishers to not rush unfinished games out.

I don't think that's possible, but at the same time, this industry has no legal watch dogs, to catch this sort of crap from happening. With indie devs I expect issues, but AAA should be what it says on the can "AAA", not "A/AA".

I do however, strongly think that a certain standard must be held. AAA games shouldn't be poorly optimized or come out in a rushed/unfinished state, and I do believe an investigation should be made as to why, and if it's top brass, get staff and co to file suit (even I don't think that would be possibly, but I damn sure want it to be, as idiots and greed should never be running a game company).

If only something like an options menu existed. You know, something where you can tweak visuals to improve performance because you're using outdated hardware. Too bad the technology for advanced features like that isn't there yet.

Just one of the reasons why it shouldn't have been released at all.

Disgrace the game should not be purchased as simple as. Settings in game should be turned down to run on consoles that where all thier sales are otherwise the game will run into a loss

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

There are noticeable framedrops on Xbox One X too when fighting many enemies but it's not gamebreaking.

It's a good game though but I don't quite understand how it got better scores than Quantum Break. Story is not as good and most chatacters are a bit boring. It's repetitive too with some filler side quests.

"Switch version of Witcher 3 looks terrible with muddy textures"

Plays control at single digit frame rate

But how do Control play on da Switch? No frames per second!

No point in comparing unrelated games and both aren't on Switch.

What needs to be turned down exactly?

It doesn't look like GPU issue given the drops seem kinda random. Maybe its a CPU issue. I suspect its just poor optimization. Patches may improve the situation.

It runs best on X1X even with a superior resolution. Maybe that extra CPU power is helping?

Just one of the reasons why it shouldn't have been released at all.

As I just mentioned it may not be a simple GPU bottleneck issue.

Also, outdated hardware can't be the issue if you actually build a game for that hardware. I mean consoles seem to be lead, so they must have noticed limitations at some point...

Its likely just bad optimization that will be improved with patches.

Time to get a new engine.... and learn how to optimise games Remedy!

QB had horrible performance issues at launch too.
Now the same thing is happending for Control? thats not acceptable.
