But is it as good as FFXIII?

For what it's worth I actually liked FFXIII ok.  FFXIII-3 was the one I didn't like the most, I hate games that impose a time limit.

What's the combat like, exactly? What's the balance between turn-based and action elements?

If were to describe it, I'd say it's the perfect blend between both. It feels very seamless, the slowing down of time to pick skills and swapping characters are smooth and holding down attack isn't always encouraged as tapping attacks at certain times change Clouds attack animations.

You Lucky one😉

I liked FF13 as well. It had a very epic feel to it, especially once the linear two thirds of the game were finished.

As for time limits, Pikmin comes to mind as a game that does time limits well. Majora's Mask. Persona 5, to some extent. FF7's opening sequence even has a time limit. But I get what you are saying; Lightning Returns was also my least favorite of the bunch, but I don't know if it's entirely because the time limit or not (I didn't like the depressing overtones).

It will be a GOTY for sure .

FF7R + TLoU 2...... Sony already won 2020.

Sony studios already competing each other LOL. Although for this scenario , Sony exclusives are competing each other.

So in other words there's actual thought that has to be put into it and not just a bunch of mindless flailing around like in FFXV?

Yeah, you definitely have to think more, and when your character is dead none of that 2nd health bar bs that 15 had. It's either Phoenix Down or they out xD

FF12 like? FF12 you could stop the action and assign your characters their next action, the gambits allows you to program them to do all that without input but sometimes you needed to change things up, swap characters etc. I'm fine with a FF12 like battle system but would prefer FF7 original vs FF15 press X to kill enemy.

Hmm, pie.

I'll try to stay optimistic that they will do it right. It's an RPG, and having it episodic could ruin character progression unless they allow it to transfer over.

As for a 40 hour Midgar, maybe the Don Corneo cross-dressing arc is what they are expanding on to fill the time. Fingers crossed (no pun intended).

I am optimistic as well.  I do believe it has to have character carryover, or it will just be weird.  That will be curious how it is handled with the ps5 coming next year.

Edit

@Barkley:I am not arguing semantics all day.  FFVII was a singular game, the remake isn't.  Call it whatever you want.  It doesn't change how Square is handling the remake.

So uncharted and many others are episodic as well because they needed more than 1 game to tell the story?

If Uncharted 1 was remastered on the ps5, and broken up into 5 parts.  Yes, those parts would be individual episodes, because all 5 parts would be needed to tell Uncharted 1's story.  And from a story perspective, Uncharted 1 tells a complete story.  Yes Uncharted's story is expanded via 2/3/4, but that doesn't mean Uncharted 1's story is incomplete.

Look, I grew up playing FFVII.  I wouldn't be shocked if I have beaten the game 12 times.  Through Midgar isn't a complete story, it just isn't.  Thus, it is an episode, because it is one piece of many that will be required to FFVII's story.

If I make an apple pie, cut it into 8 pieces.....  claim those 8 pieces are all full individual pies...  I guess many here would believe me.

Edit

And while FFVII Remake looks amazing, I am concerned about all the extra content.  I don't see how they are going to make Midgar 40 hours.  40 hours doing what?  Midgar is maybe 5 hours in FFVII.

If the how many parts of FF VII remake tells each a complete story you wouldn't now without knowing the original.

What to say the 6 Uncharted (Golden Abyss and Lost Legacy are also part) isn't a single story broken down to each game?

You may have played FF VII 100 times, you haven't played the remake to know if it will or not be a full story on the first part. Also plenty of games have been unfinished the way they release but aren't considered episoidic.

If the game is 1-4h by all means call it an episode, but if it is 12-40h it is well within industry average so not an episode to keep clean on how usually they are called.
