Forums - Movies & TV - Spider-Man no longer in the MCU after disagreement between Sony and Disney (UPDATE #2): Sony releases statement

Well, Raimi's first two films and Spider-verse are better than Homecoming and Far From Home. They don't need Disney to succeed with the character, but they could just as likely faceplant, too. Regardless, I'm sure this is disappointing for MCU fans.

Thing is, Sony "flopping" (let's say to the tune of Amazing Spiderman 2 numbers) would still easily earn them more money than "succeeding" with Disney under a 50/50 deal.

In my opinion Spider-Man doesn't need to be mixed in with MCU, it is better as a stand-alone film.

If I still gave a fart about the MCU, I'b be PISSED! Anyway, as a Sony fanboy, and someone who is no fan of Disney: Fuck Disney! Just in general. Fuck their cinematic pablum. Fuck their identity politics. Fuck their weak-ass, creatively bankrupt remakes. Fuck their monolithic presence in the world of entertainment. Yeah! Vinland Saga!

As for the business end of this as it concerns Sony......It's an iffy move. However, if people like the movies, I don't think it's going to matter much if Falcon doesn't have a cameo in the next movie. Or whoever. Most of the integration with the rest of the MCU would have been mostly fluff until the next big story convergence, which is a ways away. Hopefully the MCU train will have pile-driven into the valley by then.

Agreed. Infinity War was the last one I watched. GOTG3 and Dr. Strange 2 are the only two I MIGHT see in the future. Their remakes are trash. The only one I watched was Lion King because it was supposed to be faithful to the OG cartoon. Unfortunately the lions in the film are a perfect metaphor for Disney's direction of late. Expensive, soulless representations of the classics that came before.

Sadly, because it is Disney, parents will shove their kids down into the seats, regardless of quality.

So does this mean no more spider man game on PlayStation?

Well, considering insomniac made the best selling super hero game ever.... i think spider man 2 is prety safe as playstation exclusive.

I'm very amused at the amount of people in this thread who think that Spider-man never experienced success at the cinema until he was part of the MCU.

Tobey maguire spider man 1 and 2 are still the best spiderman movies. I wonder, what if sony makes spiderverse movie whit Tobey, Andrew garfield and tom holland. It would be amazing to see spiderverse whit 3 incarnations of spiderman!

Yup Sony, the company that butchered Spider-Man and Ghost Rider since 2007 and only made as much money off the current iteration of Spidey BECAUSE of the MCU connection is better off rebooting Spider-Man for the 4th (!) time after failing to do so TWICE on their own.

That'll end well.

lol@blaming Disney. Disney saved the spiderman movies from failing fan the last 2 spiderman movies were successful off the backs of the MCU an entire universe built without sony. asking for co-financing and shared profits of a movie is not an absurd thing to request when looking at that

Also let us not forget the thing about the Rami films: the Spiderman there wasn't particularly quippy.

Not quite 'mouth sealed Deadpool', but not good. I mean at least Superman had a reason to blast Zod in the temples...

The films were fine, but no need to treat them like the holy grail. They can do things better than the current films (I don't mind the idea of beyond High School Peter, far from it), but they can also do worse things.

Sort of think of it like Pokemon series to use an example: The Original series did things better than later episodes (filler, snark comedy, you can prefer the less friendly Ash of old, etc), while they do other things better (Battles are generally better, the Pokemon are generally more equally shown, the companion and their mons get more to do in general, etc)

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

Can we have a 007 - Spiderman, or Jumanji - Spiderman crossover, now?

Yeah the Toby Mc movies all landed in the region of 850m-750m in the cinema, the Amazing spiderman duo got around 750m a pop. Sure far from home made 1.1b but if Sony are being asked to gift 50% of that to Disney along with other things such as merchandise sales then Sony would straight up be at a loss to not just continue making movies which generate 750m region money, it's not like every kid and mum that goes into the cinema to watch a spiderman movie knows if he is part of the MCU or not, families just want to see a superhero movie, shit like Shazam/Aquaman making a fair amount of cash is proof that people will wander into a cinema to watch a movie which has no real cinematic universe behind it and will likely lead to nothing other than a 2 hour popcorn eating session.

@KrspaceT you mention the DC studios laugh while this happens... you know that entire movie universe has fallen apart right? There isn't a Justice League Vs Avengers set of movies now, there is just the MCU films and a sprawling mess of random hero movies from DC, they are in a directionless spiral of random spin offs with no future planned outside of "can we have any box office monies"
