Forums - Gaming Discussion - Should next gen systems be fully Backwards Compatible from Day 1 to encourage people to upgrade?

Are you saying next gen needs to be backwards compatible for you to buy a console day one? Because I'm pretty (very) sure both the PS5 and ...whatever the next XBOX is called, will both have full backwards comparability with this gen.

This thread title is really, really hard to get my head around, already poked to see about having it reworded slightly.

As for the PS5 and neXtBox (coining this now) they wont be fully backwards compatible. That is to say... software wise they might be very close to backwards compatible, but do you really imagine that neXtBox will have the port to connect the Kinect2.0 to in order to play Ryze or Fighter Within? How about the PS4, do you think it will be completely compatible with PS4's PSVR? The move from the PS3 which is used with the PSVR, or even things like the controller from the PS4 when you need to use the motion control and the little mouse touchpad thing on it? I think games which rely on specific hardware... Skylanders and Starlink both come to mind again where they have a thing which needs to connect to the PS4 in order to play. I can't see both systems being able to give 100% backwards compatibility.

I'd skip those like kinect games and PSVR,Just the games that matter mostly like tekken 7, and few rare indie games? It would help I think most current gen owners convert to next gen sooner me thinks :3

Oh yeah I don't think for a second someone is going to keep their X1 still connected and not buy a neXtBox because it won't run Fighters Within and Ryse but still I'm just saying that I don't believe the new systems will have 100% backwards compatibility as that is a very hard thing to achieve when you look at some of the weird titles.

Yep I never played ryse and I dont have a kinect , I bought Xbox one in 2014 then I think few months sold it 3 more years passes I buy an Xbox one X because of the 4k craze in november 2017 almost 2018 :)

"Should next gen systems be fully Backwards Compatible from Day 1 to encourage people to upgrade? " I think that's what you meant from the OP's language? sorry if I'm mistaken I'm rather tired to the point where my brain doesn't do that auto-correct on little mistakes thing which it should do.

Double sorry if your title is perfect and I am just misreading it because of my tired state, I'm coming from being stuck in a project which is 4k words... I love to waffle but it's hard to actually cut the waffle to get the marks for the project.

If you've never played anything on Kinect btw, you said you still had an X360 set up in your place for some of its games, you could check out the Xbox360s Kinect and a game called Child of Eden, you could probably get both Kinect and Child of Eden now for about a fiver (for both) in a second hand shop, but that game was an experience for me, really felt great to get lost in it, and the music / movement is incredibly good exercise if you get into it.... it's sadly one type of game which I can't play with my current set up.... Projector + Kinect = Shadow of me on screen dancing about.

Mark Cerny had confirmed PSVR will be compatible with PS5. PSVR2 will probably take a year or 2 to launch.

About OP, I don't care about BC, I have a PS4 and will keep it when I buy PS5. But considering this gen, once I buy PS5 I'll hardly turn on my PS4. But enhanced version of my favorites I may play again.

Still from the interviews it seem like they will be BC day one. Now about they having everything I was thinking Apps, UI, etc. And that isn't a problem for me as well. But considering the backlash the start of this gen, I expect that at least all apps available now will be on the release of nextgen.

They will both be 99% or more backwards compatible. I'll note that XB1S does not have a Kinect port. MS will give you an adapter to use your Kinect with it though. The same could be done on neXtBox. I'm sure something similar could be done on PS5, if necessary (though I don't see what would require this on PS).

yea, the PS4 has a dedicated Playstation Cam port, but as it's only a weirdly shaped USB port Sony will pretty certainly offer an adapter (or a "PSVR connectivity set" or sth) instead of having the same port on PS5

The few people who still want to play Kinect-2.0 games could buy this adapter for a USB-connection:

https://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Kinect-Adapter-One-Windows-10/dp/B01GVE4YB4

It works on Xbox One S + X and Windows-PCs... it shouldn't be hard to extend that compatibility to the Xbox Scarlet.

Sony already announced PSVR-compatibility for the PS5. Since the headset + camera get connected via USB and the move controllers are using standard bluetooth technology, it shouldn't be a big problem either.

With USB + bluetooth available, all the Scarlet + PS5 need for compatibility are proper device drivers. That shouldn't be impossible for big companies like Microsoft and Sony.

On Xbox it will be there BC for sure, this is clear since 3 years.

100% Backwards Compatibility has already been confirmed for both consoles.

Mark Cerny said PS5 will be fully Backwards Compatible with PS4 and PSVR in the Wired Interview Earlier this year.

Phil Spencer announced that they were pulling the B/C off of XBO/XBO X at E3 to assure that all currenlty available XB/360/XBO games would be available on Scarlett from day one.

There is no question of if they will be fully B/C, but how improved will the expereince be on B/C titles.

The Xbox One X and Xbox One S also do not have the Kinect 2.0 port.

Microsoft did release a special adapter which allowed Kinect to piggy-back off the Xbox One X and Xbox One S USB port though... I don't know why support for that couldn't be retained.
