Forums - Gaming Discussion - Should next gen systems be fully Backwards Compatible from Day 1 to encourage people to upgrade?

Do you guys agree next gen should do this ? For me it's a deal breaker because if let's say sony ported everything from ps4 and I mean EVERYTHING, to PS5 then I'd have a reason to sell my ps4 then upgrade to next gen console and give sony 500 $ instead of waiting for a slim version that cost 200 on black friday in 2024? If Sony had Everything from PS4 be ported earlier I'd sell my PS4 and upgrade to PS5 for older titles especially indies and hidden gems , If Sony does this I'd buy more PS5 games I didn't skip like earlier releases I skipped bloodborne , killzone, uncharted 4 , little big planet ratchet and clank remake, dragon age inquisition, etc which I gotten free on Psplus instead , which in turn could of gotten my money as a customer but I feel like a freeloader getting free games on PS4 I'm also waiting for more Psplus games from 2013-2017, For me not buying older games does feel good though , cant say the same for Xbox one they're free games are always lackluster except this month which gave gears 4 and forza 6 for free but games with gold are usually terrible.

Are you saying next gen needs to be backwards compatible for you to buy a console day one? Because I'm pretty (very) sure both the PS5 and ...whatever the next XBOX is called, will both have full backwards comparability with this gen.

This thread title is really, really hard to get my head around, already poked to see about having it reworded slightly.

As for the PS5 and neXtBox (coining this now) they wont be fully backwards compatible. That is to say... software wise they might be very close to backwards compatible, but do you really imagine that neXtBox will have the port to connect the Kinect2.0 to in order to play Ryze or Fighter Within? How about the PS4, do you think it will be completely compatible with PS4's PSVR? The move from the PS3 which is used with the PSVR, or even things like the controller from the PS4 when you need to use the motion control and the little mouse touchpad thing on it? I think games which rely on specific hardware... Skylanders and Starlink both come to mind again where they have a thing which needs to connect to the PS4 in order to play. I can't see both systems being able to give 100% backwards compatibility.

it's just the reason I haven't sold my xbox 360 yet is because there are games in xbox 360 not on xbox one yet like mortal kombat arcade kollection, sonic the fighters, darkstalkers resurrection yet on xbox one . I really hate Microsoft being picky in what should be BC , But , If next gen does this I'd buy day one and retire my 8th gen consoles , I did say I'd buy Xbox scarlett at launch  but in real life I'm actually uncertain and buy it 3 years later instead sometimes also apllied to xbox I guess?

Honestly I haven't considered games that need additional peripherals, although I'm sure if either company is committed to 100% backwards compatibility they'll figure something out, maybe through firmware updates and/or adapters, lol.

I'd skip those like kinect games and PSVR,Just the games that matter mostly like tekken 7, and few rare indie games? It would help I think most current gen owners convert to next gen sooner me thinks :3

Oh yeah I don't think for a second someone is going to keep their X1 still connected and not buy a neXtBox because it won't run Fighters Within and Ryse but still I'm just saying that I don't believe the new systems will have 100% backwards compatibility as that is a very hard thing to achieve when you look at some of the weird titles.

"Should next gen systems be fully Backwards Compatible from Day 1 to encourage people to upgrade? " I think that's what you meant from the OP's language? sorry if I'm mistaken I'm rather tired to the point where my brain doesn't do that auto-correct on little mistakes thing which it should do.

Double sorry if your title is perfect and I am just misreading it because of my tired state, I'm coming from being stuck in a project which is 4k words... I love to waffle but it's hard to actually cut the waffle to get the marks for the project.

If you've never played anything on Kinect btw, you said you still had an X360 set up in your place for some of its games, you could check out the Xbox360s Kinect and a game called Child of Eden, you could probably get both Kinect and Child of Eden now for about a fiver (for both) in a second hand shop, but that game was an experience for me, really felt great to get lost in it, and the music / movement is incredibly good exercise if you get into it.... it's sadly one type of game which I can't play with my current set up.... Projector + Kinect = Shadow of me on screen dancing about.

It's not perfect I'm typing fast most of the time without double checking but, I'd change the title though
