Forums - Website Topics - Recent Website Updates

It became apparent to me (after one of our members mentioned being unaware of the custom site themes available), that with the rash of enhancements I've been pushing out - now might be a good time for a "recap" of all the updates so far (some of these are more obvious and well-known by now, and some are a bit more nuanced and may be newly discovered). I will try to make this list as thorough as possible, but I'm bound to miss something. Regardless, I will sticky this thread for a week or so to ensure that everyone has a chance to catch up on what's new around here and what's been added over the past 12-18 months (chronologically), and maybe some hints as to what's still to come:

  • The ability to update and change your password was added
    • If you happen to forget your password, VGChartz will generate an ugly (and unmemorable) password which will be emailed to you. Rather than be forced to stick with that password, you can visit the Change Password page and update it to something more useable.
  • The ability to "Subscribe" to threads you are interested in, was added.
    • Rather than have to post something like "Tagged!!" in order to track a thread, you can click the "Subscribe" link at the top of any thread.
    • A separate tab within the Forum Buddy is provided to view all Subscribed posts.
  • The original Game Database was resurrected in all its glory!!! (by far, my proudest achievement!)
    • ALL users are welcome and encouraged to contribute to our database! There are tools available for uploading boxart (front, back, different regions, etc.), game page banners, critic reviews, release information, summaries, etc.
    • Helping to build and maintain our game database, is a GREAT way to earn VG$ (more on this later).
    • For a listing of how much each of the various submission types payout, have a read through this post.
  • User Reviews were given more prominence by adding them to the front page
    • Game pages have a box in the left column that will display the official VGChartz score (if a review has been written), an average of all critic reviews gathered from external sits, and User Review average. User Reviews must have a POSITIVE community rating in order to have their scores factored into the average. Members are HIGHLY encouraged to spend a few minutes reading these User Reviews (some of these articles are INCREDIBLY well written!!) and make sure to rate the review when you're finished (a simple up/down vote is provided for, at the end of each review).
    • The User Review box on the front page has its own filter that allows you to sort them by Most Recent or Top Rated
  • PM Settings have been added to the User Preferences pages, allowing for you determine who is allowed to send you PMs (All Registered Users, Friends Only, or Nobody).
  • The option to hide Banners that display within the forums (ie. Admins, Supporters, etc.) was added to the User Preferences page.
  • "Mentioning" capability was added to the forums. Mentioning a user within a post, sends a notification to that user and alerts them to your post (more on this later)
  • The original Prediction League was resurrected.
    • Users are given the opportunity to place wagers with their VG$, and try to predict hardwaresoftware sales for a given region - either weekly or lifetime totals. We have, unfortunately, had to change our software charting recently so the League is pretty much restricted to hardware sales at the moment. Regardless, it's still a great way to earn MASSIVE amounts of VG$ and fight your way to the top of the Leaderboard for bragging rights!
    • The Prediction League box on the front page has a Leaderboard filter to view leaders of the latest rounds or an Overall Top 10.
    • If you have any questions about the league, feel free to ping our buddy @kirby007
  • Notification Settings were added to the User Preferences page.
    • Users have the option to disable many of the various notifications that pop-up from time to time.
    • Notification options include those related to the Prediction League, GameDB Updates, Forum "Agreed With", and Badge notifications.
  • "Agreed With" button added to the Forums.
    • This is a simple "Thumbs Up" only feature - no NEGATIVE votes allowed or implemented.
    • The purpose of this is merely to short-circuit unnecessary posting of "Agreed" replies. Rather than having to post a one or two word response to tell someone you agree with or like something they've said, you can simply give it a thumbs up.
  • New Homepage went live!
    • One of several updates allowing VGChartz to move into a more "mobile friendly" environment
  • Banner Uploading tool on the GameDB pages was vastly improved.
    • Users who would like to provide or update the main Game Page banner for a given game, are provided with an enhanced tool that allows for real-time editing (and previewing) of their image submissions, before uploading them for admin review.
    • Banner uploads provide for a hefty VG$2.50 for accepted submissions!!!
  • Desktop Mode added
    • For mobile users who prefer viewing the full screen version of the website, a link in the footer allows for the option to switch between "Mobile" and "Desktop" layout of the website.
  • Supporter Expiration date added
    • The Supporter button in the header will be Green for users that have an active Supporter status, or Orange if Supporter status is not active.
    • Hovering over the button will trigger a tool-tip, informing you of the date your subscription with expire
    • A banner was added at the top of the Supporter Page, displaying your Supporter status and/or expiration date
  • Anti-Spam measures were deployed due to some basement dwelling jackass, who decided to harass our members
    • I won't detail all of the various measures that were taken, but suffice it to say, the User Registration process was significantly enhanced in order to better protect our community.
  • The Forums received the same "responsive" layout update, that had been done with the front page.
  • The Search option in the main header as well as the Forum Search page, have been fixed. Both options were incredibly buggy and inaccurate, but that should no longer be the case.
  • A "Dark Mode" theme was made available
    • Users may alternate between the "Standard" and "Dark" themes, by selecting the Site Theme option on the User Preferences page.
  • Thread Polls were made visible for "mobile" users.
  • A "Classic Blue" theme was made available
    • As with the "Dark Mode", this additional theme was added to the User Preferences page.
    • This theme is ONLY available to Supporters!
  • News Articles and Charts received the "responsive" design clean-up
  • User Profiles received the "responsive" design clean-up (more on this later).
  • New text editor installed in the forums.
    • We had been using a version of TinyMCE from 2008, up till about a few months ago. The version that's currently deployed was released December of 2018 and is FAR AND AWAY more sophisticated than the previous editor.
    • Beyond simply making the editing of posts easier, the new editor has a TON of enhancements available
      • Spoiler!
        Better "spoiler tag" functionality
      • Real Twitter embed functionality
      • The option to not only upload local images to your post, but to edit them (crop, rotate, etc.) as well
      • A formal "mentioning" capability that provides real-time User Lookup - just type the "@" symbol, followed by the first few letters of the user you want to *ping* and a drop-down will display, allowing you to select the user (very much like Discord, for those familiar)
      • A "mobile" version of the editor
      • MANY bugs fixed, whether it was with table formatting or youtube embeds - this editor is vastly superior!
  • "Like" notifications enhanced.
    • Users began receiving notifications when their post had been "liked" - this notification can be disabled in the User Preferences.
    • The "Like" notifications themselves were enhanced to indicate which user clicked the "like" button. Users who prefer to keep their "like" votes anonymous, can do so by updating the "Anonymous Likes" option on the User Preferences page.
  • Editing your post in the forum, now returns you to your post when you're done.
    • A stupid bug, but any time you had edited your post in the past, you would be brought back to the very first post in the thread!
  • Option to update and change the email address associated with your account, was added to the User Preferences page.
  • "Mobile" users have had difficulties in the past of clearing the notification flags from their profile - an option to clear notifications was added to the Forum Buddy tool.
    • If you have active notifications, a "Clear Notifications" button will appear at the top of the Notifications tab in your Forum Buddy.
  • A sh*t ton of new Badges were added!!
    • You can read this thread to learn about some of them, or simply visit this page to view all of the available badges.
  • User Review statistics were added to the User Profile heading.
    • Number of reviews and average community rating are now displayed
    • Clicking the number of reviews, will bring you to a listing of all User Reviews written by that user.
  • Thread polls were enhanced to display which option you had previously voted for.
    • A suggestion from @super_etecoon led to this update - if you've previously voted on a poll, the results bar will be "red" indicating which option you selected.
  • A number of Moderator options were added - most of which, I can't remember at the moment
    • I do know that Mods have the enhanced ability to move threads to different boards, as well as formally changing the thread owner.
    • I know there are MANY more updates in this area, perhaps @CGI-Quality or @Ryuu96 can refresh us!!
  • Game Tagging in forum posts was fixed
    • You can now tag any number of games to your post in the forum.
    • Tagging a game to a post, will enable your post to appear within the Forum tab of the Game Page you've tagged.
  • VGChartz has moved from providing software retail sales (for various reasons), to a shipping total model. Many changes were made for this update.
    • The software sales chart on the front page, has been replaced with official Sales Articles from various regions
    • If a shipping total has been assigned to a particular game, that number will replace the Sales Graph in the top right corner of the Game Page
    • Sales Graphs that are replaced with Shipping totals, are archived to the Sales tab on the Game Page.
  • Badge Notifications added.
    • Users that happened to visit their main profile Home Page, have always been presented with notifications of newly awarded badges (with the ability to clear those notifications).
    • Badge award notifications were added to the main header, in order to provide better visibility - these notifications may be disabled on the User Preferences page.
    • A reminder, but you do need to clear any newly awarded badge notifications on this page - as long as those notifications are present, you will continue to receive daily reminders about any new badges!!
  • The Tracked option for games, was given an actual purpose.
    • Up till this point, marking a game as "Tracked" did nothing - other than to set a simple flag.
    • With this update, any database updates to a game marked as "Tracked" will trigger a notification to you.
    • As with other notifications, this notification can be disabled on the User Preferences page.
    • More features will be added to this (articles that have been tagged for a game, forum posts tagged, User Reviews written, etc.)
  • Game Scoring in the User Profile was fixed and enhanced.
    • Besides rating a game in your profile, you are now given the option of rating games directly on the Game Page itself (so long as you own the game).
    • In addition to having the ability to rate games while on the Game Page, a second rating indicator was added to calculate the average User Rating across the community.
  • The Profile pages were completely overhauled (yet very subtilely).
    • All site themes for the Profile pages have been completely cleaned for both form and functionality
    • The profile pages have been further cleaned so that they properly format (and remain useable) within the "mobile" environment.
    • I cannot stress how much time and effort was put into this, both by myself in development as well as Ryuu and a number of other staff members, who nitpicked each border or alignment issue they discovered!
  • VG$ Transaction reporting was added.
    • By clicking either the VG$ total in your profile heading or selecting the VG$ menu option in your profile, you are given a chronological listing (and credit/debit) ledger view of all your VG$ transactions.
  • A "Favorite" statistic was added to the Community Box on the Game Pages
    • You can now see how many users have marked a given game as their "favorite", and see a list of which users marked that particular game.
    • Marking a game as your "favorite" displays those games separately (with a console image) on your main Profile listing.
  • VG$ Store was opened!
    • Users have been asking (probably since 2006, when this site first opened), what the purpose of VG$ are. Well, we now have a store available when you can start spending them!
    • Currently, there are a select number of badges available for purchase.
    • Custom signatures will be available very soon, as well as the option to purchase special forum User Tags. Keep an eye out for these announcements!!

This is about as much as I have the brainpower to research and detail for you all at the moment. If you have any questions about anything I've listed here, suggestions of how to improve any of this, or just general issues with navigating to some of these features - feel free to let me know here!!

Edit #1: A couple of other front page updates, I just remembered:

 - Blast From the Past box was added. Each day, a new regional sales chart from our entire catalog of statistics is randomly generated. A bit of nostalgia to help spotlight trending games of the past.

 - Poll of the Week was resurrected. Raven and Machina are our official "pollsters", and will drum up new polls from time to time. You can view a historical list of all PoTW questions that have been posted to visitors throughout the years. Each poll links to a thread, allowing users to further discuss their choices. There's been some debate in the past as to whether the PoTW should be tied to userid (as the general forum polls are) or IP address (as it currently is). The upside (and reasoning) for using IP address, is to allow for and encourage non-registered visitors to take part in our polls. Yes, the downside is that those with dynamic IPs are able to vote over and over again - but allowing for lurkers to take part and potentially decide to sign-up to our site, in my opinion, outweighs any requirement to restrict results to our community only.

 - Recent Game Database updates are listed on the front page. The results are grouped by game, such that if a user happens to make multiple updates to the same game, the list won't continuously output the same game over and over again.

Yep! Thanks to all that have contributed to helping things along!

Thanks a lot. This is great. I didn't knew about half of these updates to games. The favorite tracker is new to me, as is the thing about user reviews. Also it is really great to click on Favorites in a game and see which users all have marked it as a favorite.

With all these new stuff, I thought about even more new and shiny stuff (yes, yes, I am greedy).

  • With both the 'Agreed with'-Feature and the 'Subscribe thread'-feature the need for useless posts is reduced, the tagged- or +1-posts. But these posts generated VG-points for the thread-starter which are now missing. But probably 'agreed with' should give VG-points to the poster of the post you agree and subscription give points to the thread-starter.
  • Betting in the prediction league could also be an activity which gives you points.
  • Do VG-points do anything besides these levels? Maybe they can give VG$, something like 100 VG$ for each level you clear.
  • Badges could also give you some VG$ as reward. Maybe the amount is different for how difficult these badges are to get.
  • The prediction league now sadly cannot use software sales anymore, but maybe it could be expanded by predicting the Metacritic/Opencritic-score of a new release?
  • I think it would be nice to have the option to gift some of my own VG$ to other users (maybe the price in a bet or something).
  • That said, maybe even a general betting feature could be implemented. Something like the poll-feature on threads, the thread-starter set multiple options and you can choose one, but also drop VG$ on this bet. The VG$ is collected in a pool and at some time the thread-owner decides of the outcome of the bet and the pool is automatically paid out.
  • For official threads it is nice now that moderators can set a new thread-owner. Maybe it would be helpful, if the poster can himself appoint additional editors (so multiple people can edit a post if the original author appoints them).
  • Currently if in an ongoing thread the OP is edited, the author must make a new reply to announce these changes. Maybe the thread can be shown in a new color for OP edited in the forum buddy.
  • The sliders for the game scoring are hard to read in the Blue theme (dark blue on dark grey).
  • Maybe the game score could not use the average but the median for the score, to devalue troll scores.
  • Maybe if you VG$-rich you can buy (or gift) supporter levels for a month for a shitload of VG$.

OK, that is all that randomly came to mind reading about all these improvements. You do great work here on the site, Talon!

May I add an complaint:

For the last week (couple of weeks) the scrolling works wanky on this site on iPad and iPhone. I do not have this problem on any other sites.

My problem is that the scrolling is ”sticky”, if I do a quick swipe with the finger the scrolling stops instantly when I lift the finger. The normal behaviour is that a qick swipe followed by lifting the finger should keep the page scroling with simulated inertia.

It must be some programming on this site since this site is the only one I visit with this behaviour.

I want to add a few lines to this problem.

I usually browse VGC on my laptop and the scrolling doesn't work the same way it did before. While I can scroll each forum page with the mouse wheel without problems, I cannot move the page up or down with the Page Up/Page Down keys nor the directional keys pn the keyboard, unless I first click with the mouse on empty space on the page. But that defeats the whole purpose of scrolling a page without using the mouse.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

These are all EXCELLENT suggestions (well, maybe not that last one so much - but all of the other ones are great, and likely wouldn't take much effort). I'll add to my to-do list...

Not just on Apple mobile devices, anything based on Chromium does have some problems, too. The heather covering the top of the scrollbar got quickly fixed last week, but reloading a page doesn't bring you to the spot you were before anymore since then, and keeps you on the top of the page instead.

Try Shift or Tab to activate the page, after that you should be able to scroll with the direction keys/PgUp/PgDn without touching the mouse.

VGC has a couple iframes.  I wonder if one of these iframes or some other hidden scrollable element is taking focus on page load.  Could try an onload window.focus() though that will only likely work after the iframe or scrollable in question has already stolen focus.

These are all EXCELLENT suggestions (well, maybe not that last one so much - but all of the other ones are great, and likely wouldn't take much effort). I'll add to my to-do list...

Well, as I see it the users with the most VG$ on this site have barely made it past 100K. So if one month gold is 100K VG$ and therefore one month silver is 40K and Bronze 25K, this should not be attainable in a month - or even a year. And gives the rich ones a possibility to blow their VG$. But well, was just a suggestion.

Thinking about it, I came up with another idea: over the site sprinkled are some different leaderboards, like for the prediction league and a badge leaderboard. There could be a general leaderboard. It could for each category offer the choice between overall, last year or last month. The categories could be:

  • for users: post written, threads started, VG$ earned, VG-Points earned, most 'agreed with' earned, most upvotes on user reviews written by that user, prediction league VG$ won, PL win%, PL accuracy, most answers in threads started by that user, badges
  • for posts: agreed with
  • for threads: answers
  • for user reviews: most upvotes

Along these lines. The most important part is having only one leaderboard and switching between categories or time period (month, year, all time) in one central place.
