Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Mario and Sonic at tokyo olympics announced

Mario & Sonic at Tokyo Olympics is coming to Switch in 2019; official Olympic game coming to PS4 and Switch in 2019 as well.

During Sega Fes 2019’s first day, Sega revealed its partnership with the International Olympic Committee to develop and publish multiple official Tokyo 2020 Olympic games.

The first game is plainly titled Tokyo 2020 Olympic The Official Video Game and will be releasing worldwide on PS4 and Nintendo Switch in Summer 2019. It’s a realistic Olympic video game which seems to include every single sport and event from the most popular Track&Field events to BMX, Tennis, and Soccer.

Next, a new Mario & Sonic was announced, titled Mario & Sonic At Tokyo Olympics. This will be released exclusively on Nintendo Switch worldwide on Winter 2019. An arcade version of the game will be released in Japan as well in 2020, and a Sonic focused mobile game, Sonic At the Olympic Games, will be released there as well.

An official site regrouping all the games was opened. It’s only in Japanese for now but the English version of the website should be available soon.

Sega Fes 2019 will be ongoing all weekend. Stay tuned for our stories on the other announcements, including Mega Drive Mini and New Sakura Wars.

A trailer introducing all Sega Olympics games with a young boy asking his grandfather if he remembers the previous Tokyo Olympics is included below.

Good. I hope they'll ramp up this one with some good content since I imagine that they can built up what they previously made with the previous M&S Olympic game in Brazil :)

I could already see Skateboard and Badminton being part of the lots, so that's a good start !

I was getting worried they wouldn't do this again......

Hopefully they add Pauline to the Roster!

Pocky Lover Boy!

Only thing particularly surprising is that they didn't release a Winter Olympics game for the 2018 games. It was the first Olympics without a Mario & Sonic game since the series started in 2008.

Maybe they where worried about how the Switch would play out, and when it became clear that the Switch was a success it was too late to make a game in time for the Olympics. To be fair, I suppose I would have done the same in their position.

SEGA didnt even get the license to the 2018 winter Olympics, which is why they didnt even make an official winter Olympics title that year either.

Ubisoft had it though

I am really looking forward to the official game. I hope it is as good as London 2012.

well this may be the only way for me to get a baseball game (event know its a mini event lol) as a physical copy in Australia haha

Every event in a realistic sports game? That is highly ambitious. Remember, part of the olympics are soccer, baseball, tennis, golf and boxing, each of which have own dedicated video games which have high development cost. I hope the single events aren't fast produced with low value.

Just reuse Virtua Tennis assets for one of those and you've got part of the equation complete :P
