Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Rumor: MS to release Xbox Gamepass and Published titles on Switch

if this is true, I wonder if this type of partnership, along with xcloud being able to stream xbox games on any device, could be the way Microsoft finally breaks through in Japan, it's already basically non-existent there so the only way to go is up

we've already seen Microsoft being fine with Xbox One/Windows 10 exclusives but that was always different imo because Windows 10 was still owned by them and their own ecosystem (though we did see some games on Steam). The question with all of this stuff was always going to be "well how much does it affect Xbox console sales if you can get the exclusives on other things" but so far it doesn't seem to have really affected it much? In fact for 2018 I think for most of the months they were actually significantly better sales wise compared to 2017, correct me if i'm wrong.

If putting stuff like Game Pass on PC and potentially Nintendo Switch along with xcloud being able to be used on mobile devices allows them to make sales off of people who were never going buy an Xbox in the first place, then ultimately that's just more money they are making compared to before that they otherwise wouldn't have gotten with the benefit of greatly expanding their userbase and exposure of these games while not really affecting their console sales much at all, though that will remain to be seen if this turns out to be true

where as on the other hand Game Pass could allow Nintendo to get games that they maybe otherwise wouldn't have seen on Switch like big AAA games (and we've already seen them testing it out with streaming only versions in Japan)

damn this is wild to think about the possibilities and what it could all mean for the future of the industry

Problem is the move is smart in that it gives MS more market penetration regardless of their hardware sales, Switch is already a platform where people double dip and it can easily be passed off as buy the Xbox version for higher fidelity or the Switch versions for portability of MS titles. It essentially turns Switch units into Xbox units granting them access to the portable market while allowing Switch more titles in its library, they're working on Live support for the platform so this wouldn't surprise me and would be a smart move by them.

But won't it hurt Nintendo somehow?

It won't as it helps push the Switch as a platform as MS essentially would be third party support it mainly targets Sony as for them it would mean NS and Xbox would be a sort of pseudo unified platform. Keep in mind with the NS being a hybrid the portable market consistently hits 75m plus units with a good potential for 100m now add what any future Xbox platform may sell on top of that and that is the potential consumer base Sony would be up against with this move it's very forward thinking as it adds one competitor's userbase to their own, it's as smart as Nintendo turning the portable market into a factor for the home console market with a hybrid form factor.

I don't think Nintendo will publish games on Xbox. Just the fact that game pass is on Switch is a big step for Microsoft, because more platforms for game pass will generate more subscribers and more money for Microsoft. Also this can generate more Xbox sales for Microsoft, as the switch owners might be interested in buyng an Xbox One, One X, Scarlet, etc.

It's a given no Nintendo exclusive will go the other way but it'll give MS access to the portable market with out needing to create hardware in that space, the are likely a number of people who wouldn't buy an X1 with it's current offering but would buy the games if they popped up else where and really some of these games are an easy sell, portable Halo or Gears with lan like connections between Switchs for multiplayer.

The Ori developer a few months ago stated there would be Ori news "which will surprise the entire game industry".

That in hindsight looks like it was about this.

Smart by MS even if they had to give Nintendo a lot of concessions.

A streaming war is coming with Google and Amazon coming. Getting in good with the Nintendo audience (possibly 100+ million Nintendo Switch owners) is a great get for Microsoft's streaming ambitions.

Nintendo likely gets a nice cut of the action plus access to a lot of pretty nice content for doing little/no work.

I remember at E3, MS said is developing a cloud system to allow play xbox games in any device. My first though was: 'would be great on switch, for both companies'.
But also games running native on switch? That would be awesome.
MS would already benefit a lot, I dont know think nintendo will put their games on xbox.
Maybe they would license their platinum games to xbox, and both revive scalebound to both plataforms! and share more 3rd party exclusives. (for xbox, these would be exclusive in the war ps4 vs xbox).

The only drawback on all of this is: developers can care less on porting a game already on xbox to switch. It will already be avaiable to switch owners via xcloud...

All of this, please.

I must say though, if something like this happens, I won't need to buy an Xbox. Wouldn't Microsoft be crazy to do this? I mean unless they're transitioning their game division's business model to sell a service instead of software or hardware, which would be a fairly Microsoft move to make, and would make a Nintendo-Microsoft partnership much more feasible. Hardware wise, if Microsoft wants to continue selling Xbox hardware, having Nintendo exclusives and Microsoft exclusives on each other's systems would only work if Microsoft only develops the high end home console hardware while Nintendo develops only lower end and portable/hybrid software. Sharing technology would be promising though, as Nintendo could get Microsoft's Hololens and Microsoft would get Nintendo's controller innovation. I think overall though, Nintendo would be making out way better than Microsoft here, at least in the hardware and software businesses. Microsoft would get most of its money out of the deal selling Game Passes and Xbox Live subscriptions. But then why would Nintendo be investing in their own online service if this sort of partnership is in the pipeline?

I would love to see a partnership like that. Switch basically becoming Microsoft's handheld, and Xbox basically becoming Nintendo's home console. If Google does release a next-gen console like some rumors suggest they will, Google could be very steep competition next-gen since they have alot of money to throw around and moneyhat studios and exclusives with. Such a partnership between Nintendo and Microsoft could be their best chance of surviving in a 4 console market.

I mean it would be insanely powerful, and I don't just mean specs wise. Imagine if the next Switch docked in the next Xbox? Or hell, what if the Switch Pro does? Could solve Nintendo's weird problem with having a console that's sort of in between gens and is just getting momentum when the next generation starts. They release a Switch Pro that interacts directly with a next gen console and people have an all new reason to buy a Switch while long time Switch owners continue to get games developed for the Switch and Nintendo doesn't have to release a new console and cut the Switch's life short. Brand wise it fixes Nintendo's kiddie image while bolstering Xbox's family friendly image. That said I don't see any cross branding happening, aka no "Xtendos" or "Nintendoboxes" at least in official branding, Nintendo Switch and Xbox would keep their separate brands, just happen to work together.

As for a Google console, I don't think it would last. The video game console market isn't really quite big enough for 3 companies as it is. Nintendo has survived by finding a niche, be it motion controls (until they were everywhere even as the fad was passing), portables (until smart phones slowly suffocated that market), and now hybrid consoles (which seems super promising, but only until other companies develop their own version, which this partnership would save Microsoft the trouble of and Nintendo the need to find a new niche). Google would have tons of money, but unlike Microsoft, who came into the gaming scene with no reputation for console games, only (often very good) PC games (and Bill Gates, nerd legend, that definitely helped), Google would come in with a reputation of not having actually developed any games, just owning a smartphone app market full of shitty games. It'll be like Ouya but with bettering marketing and more money. Whether Microsoft and Nintendo teamed up or not, but especially if they did team up, Google would be out after one or two gens.

Even if Google doesn't enter, it might be something Nintendo has to do eventually, and certainly fits in with the direction Nadella seems to be taking the company. So I could believe this rumor if only because it would work so well. That said it's way to early to tell with a rumor this huge. Still, it's fascinating to see how quickly this thread blew up. And not just with "yeah right" posts, but with people genuinely discussing the possibility. It's a very intriguing one.

I'm referring to Nintendo possibly choosing to release some of their games on Xbox next gen via porting, not Nintendo letting Microsoft's studios have a crack at Nintendo's IP library xD I can't imagine that MS would release some of their exclusives on Switch unless Nintendo was willing to return the favor and release some of their exclusives on Xbox, but you never know with Phil.

Well won't letting Nintendo games being ported to Xbox take away from the incentives to buy Nintendo Switch?

I want to play my xbox game on the go and own a switch. I bet many people with xbox live would get a switch to play on the go. If xbox customer buy a switch they would pick first party Nintendo game. WIN/WIN for Nintendo and Microsoft. Nintendo board has always wanted Nintendo game on other platform getting an Nintendo app on Xbox hardware would really increase their revenues. Expect huge news at E3.

We are getting som crazy news here lately. MS are gathering some alliances for next gen!
MS does not want to fight Sony head on (Just like Nintendo with a hybrid console). So this is looking like a smart move.
