Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Can the Xbox be used without Xbox live?

Right now Xbox live is trending on twitter and reading about it.. people are saying their consoles can't be used without it.

People are talking about blacked out screens, thinking their consoles were bricked. Not being able to load games or even settings.

Is this normal? I get online games being down, but it sounds like the entire console goes down.

Does it work the same for the other systems? I don't recall losing access to my Playstation whenever the servers go down. But maybe I've been lucky with my timing?

it can. But i think you need to set it as the Home Console first before using it offline.

I remember you having to update the Xbox before you can use it for the first time.

But these tweets make it sound like people have already set up their xbox and have been using them in the past.

I'm not sure about that. Personally even during this black screen problem i could still play games.

Sounds like internet fauxtrage to me. I've used my XBone offline a ton with and without an active XBL subscription.

I've taken my Xbox on vacation with me and the hotel's WiFi went out. I still played through much of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, RE 4 and RE5 with no issues. Then, when I got home I still got credit for my Achievements.

I had the same issues today as many others.

In today's special case, you had to unplugg the ethernet cable or throw the console out of your wifi to make it work offline.
Simply because the menu on the X1 wouldn't show up to go offline.

Updating was necessary for the launch Xbox Ones. I very much doubt that's still necessary for today. They will already have a newer OS version.

edit: Bazoi posted in between me reading the thread, and me posting to the thread. Having experienced the problem today they explained what is going on, so this post is useless. Ignore it.

Yeah that was just the original OG. I'm guessing the Xbos S and X don't even need to worry about that. Never thought about it before.

So you'd say the issue is that when XB live went down, anyone attached to it (online/wifi/ethernet) also experienced errors.  That makes a lot of sense.  Being connected to something that is having problems in turn gives out problems.

Ok thanks.

What happened today was somewhat annoying my X1S was not connected to live before and I didn't get a black screen (for some reason Forza Horizon 4 likes to disconnect me from the live and log me out on a regular basis). The odd think is that it wasn't even completely offline today when the black screen happened since the web browser worked and I was able to download WRC 6.
