Should Hollywood stop blackwashing white characters in film/TV?

Yes. Characters should fo... 49 85.96%

No. Representation trumps... 8 14.04%

Total:57

Plus on the alternative story, reboots, etc.

That is one thing I really hate about USA entertainment and Comics. Rebooting, retooling and changing a char story every 5-10 years... create new stuff godammit.

I really like manga and how each writer creates his own chars and storyline, sure some will base on others, some stories will be similar, etc. But at least it is his own work and his freedom to do whatever he wants with it.

Like I can't remember a single writer/artist on comics besides Jack Kirbie, Stan Lee and Frank Miller. While I can say from the top of my head like over 20, and if I where to look only the titles I liked probably over 100 distinct authors.

Bring new stuff instead of regurgitating, that way you can even design your chars as you like with no one complaining of changing the source material.

and white washing too, they should stop changing characters period

Agreed, but people seem to be more willing to give THAT a pass. I probably should've put "should Hollywood stop racewashing characters?" in the poll title.

For the most part this kind of trash is only found in America. You don't see this problem in Japan or China, (which is where I live) ever! Just shows us how brain washed with liberal ideology America has become.

Where are the black dynasty warriors, black emperors, black kings, latino warriors, white monks?? China produces 100's of movies and tv shows each year. And you know what? Every Chinese movie/show that deals with Chinese lore, history, fantasy is played by Chinese actors. No whites, blacks, etc... No one here cries racist or screams for diversity. Because it would be ludicrous to do so.

If so many other countries have no problem with sticking to the original authors Character or historical accuracy. Then why is it such a big deal in America? Who cares what a handful of people think they are entilied too. If someone thinks super heroes are dominated by white people. Then please, feel free to create your own super heroes and make him/her into whatever you want that super hero to be. Don't be lazy and point the finger. Pick up the pencil and start writing/drawing.

My stance on this whole racewashing thing is, I don't care as long as the movie is good. Those who adopt the source material should decide how stricktly they wanna stick to it.
It's easy to point at negative examples for "racewashing" but hard to point at positive examples because the whole point of well made "racewashing" is that you don't notice it.
A few examples of movies or other works of art who stick very loosely to their source material and/or "racewashed" characters:
-The Departed(2006): Whitewashed the whole cast and location
-Oldboy (2003): very loose adaptation of the manga which definitely benefited the film, also racewashed all characters to korean
-Ghost in the Shell(1995): Major Kusanagi is almost a different character as in the manga
-superhero comics: comics have a long tradition of constant reimagination

Also this thought that "actors should only be casted based on how good they play/ suites the role and not based on their skin color" is very naive. for many roles the skin color determinate how well a actor is suited for said role, I doubt they would have casted a black/asian actor for Derek Vinyard in American History X if only they had played better than Edward Norton.

It really depends on how important race is to the character in question. If being white is a key focal point of the character, then I would hope it's left the same, assuming they're planning to do a faithful adaptation. If it's just white noise (heheh), then I couldn't care less. I always thought it thought it was annoying how much attention the race swapping in the Netflix Death Note received, when I was far more concerned with the characters acting completely foreign to their manga counterparts. Turning a quirky sleuth known for his anonymity into someone who gives public speeches annoys me far more than changing something as arbitrary as his skin tone.

Of course, people making adaptations have no obligation to follow the source material 1:1 either...personally I just wish to see the spirit of the original story and characters intact. If that doesn't happen, then said adaptation simply doesn't deserve my attention.

My vision on it is if someone race or gender swap someone just to be inclusive, then I don't expect him to preserve or enhance the source material so everything else will be even worse (and don't remember being wrong on it).

This is done because of 1 of 3 things.

1.. Minorities are gravely under represented in the majority of western works simply due to the time period they were originally created in, with segregation and rampant racism ruling the country. This is a chance to get diverse representation in those films without having to dig through for the oddball generic african/asian/hispanic sidekick to the core caucasian cast. I personally don't 100% agree with this either as some ethnically diverse myself, but I definitely understand it.

2. Sometimes the best actor wins / largest crowd pleaser wins. If a perfect fit doesn't want or audition for the role, and someone more ethnic grabs the spirit of the character in auditions, then by the same means, is it unfair to give the position to someone just because they're barely good enough, but looks like the source, vs the person who fits the role flawlessly in persona, but they're ethnic. People go through this in the daily workplace, constantly and it's wrong and unfair. One of my close friends and I had this happen between us, where he was offered a position in the same company over me, although I have a degree, he doesn't. I had higher production yields than he did. I won more performance awards than him (4 to his 1). I took on more leadership roles within our organization, he was told he couldn't move up unless he took on leadership (which he refused to do, so they forced him to be manager on duty for a single day, when I've been MOD for several months). And because we are friends and honest with one another, he felt it was BS and his promotions was bittersweet. So I would hope that some people simply do it just because it's the right thing to do and the right choice.

3. They need token ethnic guy to prevent the movie from being white-washed, and so they can get more minorities into the theater to see their movies. AKA the wrong reasons and why it causes an uproar.

If something like this is going to happen, then they should get in front of it ASAP, explain why they chose this person vs. others, show the proof (an audition tape), and have the person give testimony on why they love that character so much, and what inspired them to play that part. Do that and it takes away from the uproar, before it starts.

The examples you gave where almost all chars made by another ethinicity. So for the movie to work as an story in USA it made sense to be americans and not japanese, same for oldboy.

With some characters it feels perfectly fine and others it would feel like a stupid change. A black Batman would feel really off because the character is so established but at the same time I'm pretty ok with black MJ. Nobody's like Valkyrie and Ben urich don't matter though

I;'ve given up on Hollywood adaptations for good. I haven't enjoying films much anyway..

Blackwashing and whitewashing is nonsense.

God bless You.
