No XC 2? Boooooooooooo

To be fair, the only category where it was likely to get a nomination was Best RPG, and all 5 of the Best RPG nominations did review higher than Xenoblade Chronicles 2 except for Octopath, which it tied at 83 on metacritic. The artstyle change to a more anime looking aesthetic was controversial, so a Best Art Direction nomination was highly unlikely. Maybe it should have gotten a Soundtrack nomination, I'm not sure there as I haven't heard much of it's soundtrack.

Other than RPG, it should definely have been nominated for best soundtrack.

My thoughts:

-Forza Horizon 4 got cheated out of a GOTY nomination I see, it reviewed higher than MH World, Celeste, and AC Odyssey.
-AC Odyssey is definitely an RPG, not an action-adventure game and should have been nominated as such.
-Annoyed that ugly as sin Octopath got a best artstyle nomination, hopefully it loses in the end.
-Feels like they really had to scrape the bottom of the barrel for soundtrack nominations this year, this year didn't really have many standout, memorable game soundtracks sadly.
-I 100% agree with their best performance nominations, having played every game listed there I loved all of the listed actors/actresses.
-SNK Heroines got shafted, every other category has 5 nominations except for Best Fighter, it's as if the Nomination panel didn't even know that SNK Heroines existed.

Nominations aren't always determined by review scores. Horizon just got fewer votes than Celeste in the end.

While its stupid that Best fighter is missing a nomination I think it speaks to the fact that either no outlet nominated a 5th game, or the nominations for the 5th game didn't meet some internal minimum requirement.

I vote GoW all the way.

Best Performance

Awarded to an individual for voice-over acting, motion and/or performance capture.

  • Bryan Dechart as Connor in Detroit: Become Human
  • Christopher Judge as Kratos in God of War
  • Melissanthi Mahut as Kassandra in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
  • Roger Clark as Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Yuri Lowenthal as Peter Parker in Marvel’s Spider-Man

I've only heard the three bolded, but I agree with the nominations. They all performed their characters really well.

Best eSports Moment

SonicFox Side Switch Against Go1 in Dragon Ball FighterZ at EVO 2018

Lol, a lot of these games come out near the end of the year. How can anyone have played them all. I just started Spider-Man yesterday. Haven't even tried any of the other other GOTY contenders.

Critics make up most of the nomination panel and they get early access to games for review purposes, and they play them quickly in order to get reviews out before the review embargo drops.

Personally I have played 5 of the 6 GOTY nominees (AC Odyssey, MH World, Spider-man, God of War, and RDR2) and have beat 3 of them so far (AC Odyssey, God of War, and Spider-Man) while I quit MH World because I didn't like it and am still in the middle of RDR2 (which is huge).

Wow, you are on top of it.   I kind of expect the critics to have played all of these games, but the average gamer probably hasn't.

With the Oscars, the release a lot of the films right before nomination time.  But the thing with films is that they only take 2 hours to watch.  If I wanted to binge all of the Oscar nominees, then I could do that without too much trouble.  But with games, it takes a lot more time.  I've spent the last two months playing through Octopath Traveler, lol.  I would need a lot more free time to play through most of those games on the list before the show.

I've played 5 of these (after finally caving and getting a PS4). Spiderman, Celeste, and RDR2? Great games. I'm happy they're there. I just wished I liked GOW and MH:W more. It sucks especially with GOW, because I loved it on the PS2, but this one just feels... off. MH was decent, but I prefer 4 Ultimate. As for AC, I haven't really enjoyed the series since Black Flag, so no thank you.

My opinion on nominations:

Game of the Year- Monster Hunter: World
I loved God of War and AC: Odyssey but MH shut everybody up who doubted it and made so many people eat their words. Not to mention the hours I've put in the game was worthwhile and this was definitely one of the best games I've played. Even if it doesn't win I'm glad it got nominated. MH really deserves the win imo.

Best Ongoing Game- (Overwatch ?)
MH should've been in this category since they are constantly updating it with new and FREE content. However out the choices I guess I pick Overwatch. I did stop playing Overwatch during the summer since my enjoyment for it stopped though.

Best Game Direction- GoW
I'll give this to GoW. What they did with this franchise was brilliant and it showed throughout the game.

Best Narrative- GoW
Simple story but I was definitely captivated by it.

Best Performance- Melissanthi Mahut as Kassandra in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
She deserves to win imo. Kassandra is just so good and delivers every line perfectly. She oozes her acting through Kassandra.

Best Action / Adventure Game- GoW
Action and combat in GoW triumphs the others.

Best Role-Playing Game- Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Orca / Square Enix)
I LOVED MH but not as a rpg. DQ XI was my first DQ game and is now one of my favorite rpgs. It deserves to win this.

Best Fighting Game- Dragon Ball FighterZ (Arc System Works / Bandai Namco Entertainment)
Most obvious win

Best Multiplayer Game- MHW
The gun games might win it but this should go to MHW. This game is FOR multiplayer.

God of War everything.

I don't know about everyone else..... but that game totally ruined every other game for me this year. With all other games I just kindaknew what to expect going in and eventually they all fell into a sort of pattern. With GOW, from start to finish I just kept on getting wowed. Like I was discovering something nw at every turn.

Only other times in my life I had those kinda feels were Ocarina of time, SoTC, MGS, GOW1, FFT, Vagrant story, U2, Horizon ad now GOW.

Honestly, since I played Nier Automata and God of War, I can't be involved fully in a game, nothing feels satisfying enough compared to these two...
