#49 - The Wonderful 101

Wii U - 2013

I wasn't sold when I first saw the game, and bought it mainly because Platinum were involved. Ended up being one of the best games on the WIi U, and one of my favourite action games of all time. Loved the colourful art style, the cheesy dialogue that somehow completely worked, the versatile combat and the memorable boss fights (especially the last boss, which just built and built and became epic). Had a few flaws, mainly when the touch pad controller was involved, whether that be the forced sections you had to play on it (not many thankfully) or when the weapon drawing wasn't quite accurate enough and caused you to die. But overall, a really great action game that will sadly be almost completely forgotten in videogame culture.

Perhaps this is a strange game to include in a list of the best games ever made, when today we live in a world where there are much, much more advanced football games out there. 'Soccer' does however hold a special place, as I played this with my cousin at our grandmother's house a lot when we were young. I don't play many games' multiplayer modes, but this was one of the lucky few.

It is a very simple game, almost like an Atari game. All you can do really, is run and kick the ball. It isn't fast, there's no tricks and the goalkeeper has no AI, but it is a lot of fun. Simple games often are, because they're so easy to pick up and play. There's no need for instructions, and there's no learning curve; it's just you, and the game.

Obviously the best thing about 'Soccer' is the little animation when it's half-time. I assume me and my cousin played this game mostly because of the joy you get from this little part. Surprisingly, cheerleaders will come onto the field for a couple seconds and do a dance accompanied by cheerful music. This was funny to us, because in real life, this doesn't actually happen during football matches.

#48: This is an extremely obscure game, but it is a clone of a more well known NES game. In that game, the player is a wizard that can build blocks directly in front or below him to create paths and obstacles to solve puzzles.

57.  Civilization (PC) - I never really wanted a PC for gaming until I saw a few friends obsessively playing this game.  Then I realized I needed a PC too.  ("It's for schoolwork dad.")

Funny enough, after the fall of the wall (I'm from eastern germany) my father decided he needed a computer. For work was probably the excuse and he paid it through his work. But he played a lot of Civilization on it, really a lot. I also played Civilization, but also LucasArts adventures, UFO, Doom, Descent and other stuff.

Wow, that's a great story!  Thank you for sharing.

Not sure what I can really add to that other than that was a great time to start PC gaming.  There were so many great PC games from the 90's.  So many that I really can't keep track of them all.

I wont be making a lot of clues for my own list, but I'll try for the new games.
Also, couldn't add Crash trilogy since I have to separate each game, but the collection itself was gonna be ~28 on my list for what it's worth.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

I guess that could be Zipang on the PC Engine? It's pretty much Solomon's Key in all but name.

You are close. I’m indeed talking about a clone of Solomon’s Key. Mine however takes on a more ‘Toy Story’ style of graphics, so to speak. I don’t really expect anyone to guess this unless they do extensive Google searching, or are just remembering from last year though, but major bonus points if you know.

Love participating in this each year!!

49.  I really don't know, but I'm guessing either Elite or Eve Online
47.  Escape from Monkey Island

EDIT:  I take it back.  I actually think #49 is Descent.
