Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Switch Online Cloud Saves are Deleted after a Grace Period if Subscription is not Renewed

OP Updated for clarification -RavenXtra

The link is there, just slightly hidden:
https://www.gamerevolution.com/news/432059-nintendo-switch-online-cloud-saves-are-deleted-when-your-subscription-expires

The UK site does mention this, so I that's where this news comes from:

After my Nintendo Switch Online subscription expires, will my Save Data Cloud files and Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online save data be erased?
Save data stored with Save Data Cloud cannot be kept outside of the duration of your Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online also uses the Save Data Cloud, so the same applies. However, if you keep the Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online save data saved locally on your Nintendo Switch console, then you can use it again if you purchase another membership.

The US does give some additional info:

Is my save data retained if I cancel my Nintendo Switch Online membership?
We are unable to guarantee that cloud save data will be retained after an extended period of time from when your membership is ended. However, you can continue to use the save data that is saved to your system memory.

Well, that's fucking scummy. I won't be paying for it most likely anyways.

I'm more shocked by the fact that Sony deletes cloud saves.
I guess it's because they don't have their own cloud service? Haven't heard anything ever about this happening on Xbox.

They do?

Are you serious? Is this serious? I need a source immediately. You couldn't give me a bigger headache today if you tried. I literally just brought this up as a possibility. This has to be some sort of sick joke.

this is trashy. gj nintendo.

It's so dumb, however this isn't entirely true. They note that after an extended period of time after your subscription has ended, if it isn't renewed the data could be deleted.

There is a grace period seen here;

https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/22521/p/897

Where it notes, "We are unable to guarantee that cloud save data will be retained after an extended period of time from when your membership is ended. However, you can continue to use the save data that is saved to your system memory."

We don't know how long that extended period of time will be but yeah, this thread is misleading. Same thing happened at reddit. And yeah, it is kind of Nintendo's fault for being not as transparent as we'd like but Sony deletes them too after 6 months.

FIFA's save file is 5gb, that's more than some cloud services allow even OneDrive cuts off at like 5GB. Cloud storage costs money, and $20 isn't going to cut it. Splatoon should be server side, but in the meantime this prevents even more cheating. Lets Go has good intentions to prevent cheating, item duplication, etc. Any more questions?

I mean, if cloud saves are a feature of your online subscription model it makes sense to delete the cloud saves once a online subscription expires.

This is a joke. Worst online service ever. What's the point of cloud saves if Nintendo are going to just delete them

Sony deletes them too...but granted, they do allow local backups and so did Nintendo with Wii U. I don't get why they're acting all incompetent all of a sudden when it comes to backing up saves.
