Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Did the Switch finally destroy Nintendo's "Kiddie" image?

The Switch can't destroy an image that Nintendo dictates. The Switch, just as any other Nintendo console, is designed around children. Both the system and the Nintendo software offers show that. Of course there are some games that are not meant for children but that doesn't really erase Nintendo's intention. Nintendo wants to be the console for kids and they're working hard to make that obvious.

A better way to word what your saying is Nintendo aims for there systems to be for everyone. That includes children. Hence the measures they take.

I'd frame it a bit differently, as in it's a system that targets children but also offers content for older people. It's easy to see where the main focus lies here. Kinda like anime for little girls that's enjoyed by middle aged men.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Nintendo is for adults as well as children however it will always have a kiddie image as long as the likes of mario, pokemon, animal crossing, splatoon etc are its biggest IP's. So it will never lose that image.

It will be interesting to see how Nintendo reacts to their fan base being primarily adults from now.

The amount of adult fans Nintendo has amassed over the past 35+ years is simply going to outnumber any 5-12 year old range they can get from now on in any gen, especially with the Wii/DS kids turning into adults this gen.

Sure kids are part of the picture and always will be for Nintendo, but this is still a significant demographic shift for them.

Nintendo keeps repeating how family friendly they are.

When talking about sales, you often see Nintendo fans expecting strong Nintendo sales around christmas time, cuz that's when kids gets their presents.

Claiming otherwise is nothing but denial.

All three manufacturers have their highest sales at Christmas by a large margin.

Majority of Nintendo's fan base is adult and I don't that ever shifting back, there's too many generations of Nintendo fans now that are over 18 and millions more that will be crossing that threshold who were kids with the DS and Wii in the next couple of years if they aren't already there yet.

A kid who was 8 when he got a DS in 2007 is 19 today ... that's just a simple fact, Nintendo gains a few million "life long fans" every gen ... that adds up after a while to the point where they are the majority.

Well, didnt know that you could define as most when more than 40% of the games you mentioned dosent fall in the criteria you put them in.

And BOTW is family friendly.Or rather, it is for everyone. But you know thats not the word you used.

I used “family friendly” and didn't mention any games.

Also, Bayo 1-2 are not first party games.

What are you reading?

You come across as overly defensive. -__-

Oh, for some reason I only ever read the kids part, and not family friendly.Thats on me.My bad!

Bayo may not be first party, but both(Bayo 2 and 3) are fully funded by Nintendo.A second party game, that will always be exclusive.Given that this is a very deliberate decision by Nintendo, it isnt much different from them making the games themselves. For my stance in what a mature and adult game is, read my previous post.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

What adult or mature content do you think that BOTW has? @Nautilus

What kid content does BOTW have? Is it the ruins of the once sprawling kingdoms with thousands dead? Is it the monsters that fill the landscape? Where is the kid-oriented content?

No, the people that have that perception are silly, and the Switch hasn't done much to change that.

Then why is the Switch marketed to Young adults half the time? Switch isn't a children's console, it's a console designed for a wide audience including children, to say otherwise is delusional.

Nintendo's fan base is majority adult. That's just becoming a fact now.

The majority of people buying things like the Switch, NES Classic, SNES Classic, even Amiibos I would bet are grown adults.

Nintendo's demographics have shifted, people who grew up with the NES and SNES are now in their 30s, 40s even. But even people who were kids when they got a DS or Wii 10-12 years ago are today adults now. GameCube/N64 generation are in their 20s/30s. As generation after generation has past, Nintendo has amassed a growing and much larger adult fan base to the point where they now outnumber any number of 5-12 year olds that will be part of any generation for Nintendo IMO.

It's adult majority now. It happens in other mediums too ... at one time comic books were thought of things for children, but today probably 80%+ of comics are purchased by adults. Nintendo didn't have the same backing in the GameCube era, but they do today, enough time has passed and they've grabbed new fans every gen to add to the "lifers" they got from before that things are shifting.
Is that really fact, cause if it is then Nintendo is laughably foolish for trying to be everyone's parent still. Making a majority of their userbase suffer just because of small minority that Nintendo thinks they need treat like babies. I do remember they said something about most Switch users not being kids a while back, but that was 10 million sales ago.
