Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Did the Switch finally destroy Nintendo's "Kiddie" image?

Nintendo seems to believe the Switch is for kids based on how they're against messaging and voice chat.

BURN!!!

They seem to be trying to somewhat shake the kiddie image and appeal to college gamers while maintaining a family friendly image, so that they'll still sell to kids, but also sell to teens and young adults, and older adults that want to have adult games but also share their console with the kids. Their marketing is about as good as you could get for accomplishing this, and they are making steady inroads towards this goal. However, I think some of the kiddie vibe to their brand is clinging on, and they have a ways to go before it's completely gone. However, by the time they finish, they'll have appeal across the ages without losing their iron grip on the market for console games for younger children.

Yeah broad appeal is a great thing.  I was browsing the PS4 with my wife looking for a game for her, my stepson, and I to play together.  Could not find a single damn game that appealed to her and had local co op.

Meanwhile we fire up the Switch and are currently playing Donkey Kong, Kirby Star Allies, ARMs, Mario Kart 8  and have Mario Party pre ordered.  Now she is even open to trying Diablo 3  when before she was not.

If you're seriously looking for some, start with Overcooked, or any of the LEGO games, or Knack, or Wipeout, or Everybody's Golf, or Crash Bandicoot Trilogy, or Little Big Planet 3, or Rocket League, or Terraria, or the Jackbox Party games, or Trackmania, or Octodad or Don't Starve Toegther...

That should get you started.

Ohh well, you do what you can! As long as she's gaming right? :)

Indeed, I almost talked her into Detroit Become Human, but she said if we are spending 60 bucks, she would rather just get Donkey Kong.

Both are great games and her wanting to play a game with me came so far out of left field I decided to just give her what she wanted lol.

I don’t think so. If Wii U’s first Year third party lineup couldn’t do that, then Switch still has a long way to go imo. I think that stigma is more related to their in house work. Nintendo doesn’t make mature games, they make games that are fun for everyone, but are typically aimed at younger audiences. Every Nintendo console has had their share of mature games, even Wii, but Nintendo themselves don’t aim for that demographic, outside of Bayonnetta. And on a sales note. mature games aren’t selling well on Switch, especially compared to how well Nintendo’s own titles do, and how much better these titles sell on other systems when they’re multi platform.

0331 Happiness is a belt-fed weapon

I they want to shake it, they can start by making the next Metroid game "M" rated. The fact that what? 90+% of the games they release are rated "E" does nothing to help this reputation.

Doom sold well. Skyrim sold well. L.A. Noire sold well. Octopath Traveler (it's not M rated, but it's still considered Mature) sold amazingly well. You can't say they're not selling well when numbers and official statements from the publishers themselves say otherwise.

No. There are people still out there who still have this image of Nintendo. These are called haters or fans of another brand.

At the starting of this year I would agree. But now we just got Labo, and are getting a watered down pokemon game made even easier for kids. So I don't know for sure.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.
