Bundesliga - Matchday 8 - Nobody wants to win the league
You know that a league has no dominant team when the leader does not exceed an average of 2.0 points per game. Leader Gladbach lost (0-1 in Dortmund), but none of the possible teams to overtake them could pull it off. Wolfsburg remains the only undefeated team with a draw in Leipzig which left both teams behind Gladbach. Bayern failed to decide their game in Augsburg early, so the hosts got a late equalizer. Freiburg (still hard to believe that that is a thing this season) lost to Union Berlin. Schalke lost to Hoffenheim, and Leverkusen to Frankfurt.
So there were six teams who could steal the lead from Gladbach, but they all failed. The result is that the top half of the table is within 3 points after 8 matchdays. You don't see that often, in any country for that matter.
Aside from Freiburg ranking high, there are no real surprises in the Bundesliga. Spots 10-12 are held by teams who want into the Europa League, but inconsistent play, injuries and a bit of bad luck costed them points this season. The ranks 13-18 are occupied by all the predictable teams. Düsseldorf, Union, Köln, Augsburg and Mainz are within 1 point. Paderborn had played well early in the season, but repeatedly missed out on points because of dumb defense; they are now at the point where the team begins to doubt itself, so they lose because they play badly. Paderborn really needs a win soon.
