Stairway to Heaven or November Rain? Which is better?

Stairway to Heaven 36 76.60%

November Rain 11 23.40%

Total:47

Now thats a different topic isnt it?
I go for stairway to heaven. I have such a respect for the quality of the material Page produced on studio in early 70's. Its so well recorded, so full of layers, with a memorable solo and progression. Its like the basis for all songs that "start slow and ends epic". I will never forget the impact I had when listened it for the first time. Also, it has messages to the devil backwards which gives it an advantage
On the other hand, november rain is absolutely amazing, one of the best ever. Slash mentions on his book that axl spent a huge amount of time on the song, recording all those keyborads making it sound like an orchestra. I was very impressed when he mentions that actually all that was keyborads... there is no orchestra recorded for the song. Its amazing.
Such a shame Guns had to end at that time.. they probably still had one more masterpiece in their hands to release...

By the way, people saying the ))'s were better than the 90's in music... please... just stop.
If you consider only rock n roll then, wow, there is absolutely no comparison to be made.
For rock n roll it goes like this:
70's -> 90's -> 60's -> 80's -> 00's

I don't think I had even heard November rain before, at least not in full.

It was nice enough, loved the ending but not something I am planning to add to my playlist.

Stairway gets my vote, I like the slow build up as it progresses, going from slow ballad to more of a rock song.

That said, if I have to put a vote to a long rock epic I would go with Kashmir, Hotel California or if I have a lot of time to spare Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Stairway to Heaven is a much better song. November Rain sounds contrived somehow. Like they were trying to write some soppy power ballad to stand with your Elton Johns and Billy Joels sort of thing. Stairway on the other hand sounded like they were actually experimenting with new sounds and blending together folk and rock in a way that hadn't been done to that degree before. And it's just much more melodic, November Rain isn't close in that regard.

Satanic message? I always thought StH was about those born with silver spoons in their mouths?

If you play it backwards!

"Here's to my sweet Satan/The one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is Satan/He will give those with him 666/There was a little toolshed where he made us suffer, sad Satan."

Interesting...

Here's my reply to that:

Could some moderator move this to the music section of the forums? Since there is one, might as well, right?

Done

Sorry guys!

And as expected, Stairway is winning. Ah well, I didn't grow up on Zepp so I just don't really get their music. I know it doesn't suck for sure it's just not my thing I guess. It's one of those things where I try to get into it but I just can't. Also, for me, Axl has one of the greatest voices in rock so it enhances already the sounds that I prefer in GnR's music.

Also, out of the 70's bands Zepp is my LEAST fav. I absolutely LOVE The Doors, Pink Floyd and The Beatles and stuff like that. And here's the weird thing. I don't hate Zepp, I just don't listen to them unless I hear it somewhere. And when I do, I don't get annoyed by it I'm just not like OMG it's ZEPP playing like I do with some of the other bands. I'm weird.

November Rain never got the hype behind Stairways to Heaven if I really want to listen to a Led Zepplin song I rather would listen to Whole Lotta Love, Kashmir, Immigrant Song or Moby Dick.

Dude. The 2000s were dramatically terrible.

There is some good rock in the 2000's. Alter Bridge, Seether, Three Days Grace, Staind, Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, Tantric, etc. I certainly can't defend what he's saying about older music though. The 90's had plenty of great Rock; The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Offspring, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Tool, Days of the New, Creed, etc. And of course the earlier decades have some great Rock.

Eh, Staind is decent. My stepfather liked Alter Bridge for a while but I never did. You forgot about the best ones from the 2000s though; Linkin Park and Muse, but they don’t save the 2000s being overal the worst decade in general since the ‘50s imo, by far.

To me this is kind of like asking, "Which game is better Shovel Knight or Super Mario Bros 3?"  Shovel Knight is a tribute to classic gaming, while Mario 3 actually is one of the best games from classic gaming.  The tribute is good but not as good as the original thing.

This is not meant as a disrespect to Guns N Roses.  In the late 80's Rock had become incredibly stale with mostly just hair metal bands, and GNR got Rock back to its roots which was sorely needed at the time.  But Led Zeppelin and Stairway to Heaven represent the best of those roots.  (Clearly Stairway is my pick.)

Also if I really wanted to listen to a long song by Guns and Roses I would pick Paradise City over November Rain. Other long rock songs I would rather listen to over the two in the poll are Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, Holiday by Scorpions, Hey Jude by The Beatles, Eminence Front or Baba O'riley by The Who, Somebody Up There Likes Me by David Bowie just to mention a few.
