Witcher 3 by a wide margin for me. Absolutely set a new standard - so good that almost everything I've played since then has been a dissapointment to me. (because of me comparing everything to Witcher 3 constantly)
RDR and AC2 can fight about 2nd place.

IMO its still GTA San Andreas.

Second this.None of the rest even compares.

In terms of how the actual world is made technically, then nothing quite measures up to GTAV on the market. It's safe to say that the GTAV games are pretty much always the benchmark at how you do an open world. The amount of work put into it is unparalleled. This is coming from someone that's not even a GTA fan but I just admire the level of detail put into the world. You can literally do anything you want in it. Ask anyone, on average, and they will more than likely say the exact same thing.

Now as far as actual beauty goes and which open world I find myself absorbed in the most, then that goes to Shadow of the Colossus. I put that game in for a few minutes just so I can relax my mind. The vast, gorgeous open plains are a sight to behold!

I wouldn't call Gothic 2 "open-world" the way we understand it today. It had "worlds" with loading screens, albeit just 3 for the whole game. But for it's time (2002) it was no doubt the best.

It is an open-world, it's just not sandbox as well, like most current open-world games tend to be.

This is great video about Gothic 2

Breath of the wild, Skyrim and Xenoblade Chronicles X are my faves.

The Witcher 3... it's barley a competition, take that out however and it's hard to choose between GTA5, Horizon, MGS5 and Red dead. I'd also add God of war in there as it's full open world, with linear segments yes but still full open world. I'd add in BoTW but I was severely let down with that game, still deserves to be along side them never the less as the fun I had with it was due to the open world. Skyrim ..maybe but It felt dated on release and the setting was bad for traversal, quite annoying actually but Oblivion and F3 are up there.
Nothing comes close to the witcher 3 though, it has transended so many genres and aspects of gaming.

talking about god of war , i would like you to define Full open world for me , since when I play god of war I get a hub world game with large vista's that confines me to set paths with circumstances like clambering over a fallen log can only be done in a marked space in the middle of that log , I also recall a smallish  lake with thor's statue on an island that had a rocks running through the middle of the lake to form a barrier even though the lake wasn't large all it did was make it feel silly.

It's still full open world, trust me, I travered the whole thing multiple times to get the platinum. There are no barriers, only at certain times in the story and many of the games listed also have those.

I have finished it and loved it , I agree it's far more open than it's predecessors , i would class it as a  semi open world, defined by me as being a game with large areas but one that limits you to set paths and areas in that world defined by the developers , to me a true God of war  open world game is one where beyond what paths the the developers have put in place I Am able to go anywhere  so long as it's physically possible to do so.

Morrowind hands down.

Dang, my fave genre, too many of em I like, but I’d have to go to the one I’ve been going back to a couple of times the most, and that’s The Witcher 3, honorable mention to Red Dead Redemption.
