Forums - Gaming Discussion - Change Genres?

As I've said in a previous thread, some games did very well when they went into new genres.

EX: Metroid successfully becoming a first-person-shooter with Metroid Prime, or Mario going from 2D to 3D platformer.

But there are still some games out there that haven't tried certain genres, and I was wondering what it would be like if they did.

EX: What if Star Fox went from a rail shooter to an open world spaceship shooter, or if Punch-Out became a 2D Tournament Fighter?

I'm not saying these games have to permanently change genres (Mario and Metroid sure didn't), I'm just wondering how they'd do in different genres than their original installments.

What game franchises would you like to see in a new genre, and which genre?

My first instinct: A TPS in the universe of Valkyria Chronicles, borrowing mechanics from steampunk and the rocket suit from Vanquish.

That sounds cool. :)

What if Nintendo brought back Wild Gunman, but as a shooter in the Splatoon 2 engine?

Paper Mario (rpg)-> Sticker Star (action-adventure) ?

its not always for the best.

TTYD is still by far the best Paper Mario game, and them makeing it this non rpg sticker thingy has not worked well.

hmmm let me think.

How about a fully 3D Kirby? like Mario Odessey but with kirby?
Same with Ecco the Dolphin, I think that could work in 3D.

Grand Turismo that was a kart racer or Rally type racer? :)

I would like to see a the order 1886 rpg. It didn't work as a shooter, but the world seems interesting enough for a RPG.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Yeah, how come we've never gotten a fully 3D Kirby to begin with?

And didn't Ecco The Dolphin go 3D on the Dreamcast?

Yes, I suppose it is.

I'd like to see Square Enix make a turn-based Final Fantasy, I think it'd be a great genre change an-oh wait... nevermind. :P

I think Overwatch would work as a third person shooter, I know it's still a shooter, but different perspective... maybe if they actually made some singleplayer content it could work in third person? I don't know, I just prefer third person shooter to first person.

A genre change that has already happened/is happening that I'm happy about, is God of War, I mean, it's sort of gone from hack n' slash to over the shoulder action adventure with RPG elements, which I'm okay with because the game looks SO good in my opinion.

A metroidvania Tomb Raider spinoff could be interesting, but it'll never happen because it's not a good idea from a financial standpoint.

That's called Bravely Default/Second and Octopath Traveler :P

I'd like to see a Megami Tensei horror game, retaining the RPG elements but just creating an atmosphere in that vein.
