Forums - General Discussion - Is the Oculus GO just a $200 VR porn device?

So I can't understand why they would stop at a 3 degrees of freedom controller to meet the 200 price tag. €200 does not mean it's going to make it into the hands of more costumers. Is it a trick or are oculus being geniuses and have come up with a subtle way to market high fidelity VR porn for a cheaper price tag. The problem so far at marketing porn, besides the obvious is it takes some omph to get the clarity at a distance and mobile devices just don't have that, nor do devices like the Gear VR have the lens quality even if the device can handle the pixel amount.

I recently got to see some quick snippets of gaming and video content on a Samsung Oddessy and I was blown away by the difference from PSVR. It's night and day. So while looking at the stats of Oculus GO apart from other standalone devices like the gaming and interactive focused mirage, that the GO is subtly focused on media, perhaps not just porn but perhaps whether they have intended to or not, this is a device that will show near PC VR porn qaulity to costumers, a great way to get VR into the masses.

Also, it'll be pretty decent for productivity as well, this could see some business use if apps are developed for that side of the coin.

Pretty nice regardless of the controller freedom. This could easily fit into the Mobile phone pre plan market. It's not going to wow people all that much until of course...they watch some porn on it.

GearVR is the porn device. As long as Oculus is tethered it will remain useless as such.

Why are tethered VR devices even a thing?

But Oculus Go ain't tethered. You also don't have to insert and calibrate your $300 - $1000 Samsung Smartphone in the device.

They're just trying to carve out their portion of the market. Sony VR and HTC Vive both have rather clear targets, the former being a quality, comfortable, affordable (comparatively) VR experience with a large library for PS4 owners, and Vive has focused on enthusiasts and pushing the VR experience to its limits.

Oculus has kind of felt like the odd man out... it lacks the backing of Sony's library and install base, is primarily for PC users with required specs that are only a little less demanding than Vive's, and costs a lot more than the very cheap "VR"-ish experiences. They just gotta identify exactly who they're targeting.

For more complex experiences/games that can't be calculated fast enough on a mobile SoC (Snapdragon / Exynos ) but need power in the PS4 Pro / GTX 970 area.

Also, if the VR-headset is connected to a home console or PC, you have access to much more storage space... good VR games are huge due to detailed textures (much more important in VR than on a TV screen). 4K or 5K video files are even bigger if you want an acceptable quality (and the streaming quality is usually shitty).

Oculus GO with 32 GB or 64 GB can't even extended with microSD cards as far as we know, so it would be already full with a handful of good VR games or video files.

I thought that too until I seen the difference between gear VR and PSVR and then again recently with Samsung odessy (Which I haven't watched porn on but I know from the media it will be a night and day difference)

That is why I think Oculus GO is a porn device, it is a step head of PSVR for media quality, almost nearing PCVR levels. Sure, you can say it is a device meant for productivity and social applications but what do people use their laptop for more, Conference calling or Porn?

Because Lithium batteries can literally blow your mind.

Ah, never mind, I failed to do research. I assumed that it meant tethered in the sense that it was locked to certain applications, rather than not being mobile.

Whatever the reason behind Oculus limiting so much in terms of usability other than media I think it's genius, the mid tier device, santecruz, won't even see near the sales of this one and they know exactly what they are doing. They aren't even in the game to compete with devices like the Mirage. I think if they could market this right, they could carve a hold that apple should have done a year ago had Steve Jobs still been at the helm.
