Could a Mario FPS work?

BEFORE YOU SHOOT ME, HEAR ME OUT!

Yes I'm aware there has been an over-saturation of first person shooters on the market, but Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle showed us that Mario characters with guns doesn't have to be a bad thing.

Also, one of the most beloved games by Nintendo (mostly Rare, but still) in the 90s was GoldenEye.

Someone even did a GoldenEye mod that incorporates Mario character models into the game, and the overall reaction has been quite positive so far:

This got me thinking that, provided it uses more cartoonish weapons like Mario + Rabbids did, a Mario FPS could work. Obviously other aspects would have to be considered, such as making the violence much more pretend and silly (enemies disappearing in little puffs of smoke, sent flying into the air from regular shots, etc.), and adding in more traditional Mario elements like platforming and coin collecting.

Well, those are my thoughts on the idea, so provided we keep it a civil discussion, let me hear your thoughts. :)

We were going to have that, but it became Splatoon, and that's a good thing.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I said first person, not third person.

Sure, they could make it work, but I doubt they'd ever end up doing that.

I think a Mario game where you can't see Mario is bad for branding. Just a red sleeve and white glove holding a gun... yeah I can't say that would be smart. It's a neat idea, but not for Nintendo - they're market leaders, not followers.

Well, both are forms of shooters, so still counts. Anyway, I don't think we will get anything close to shooter Mario anytime close. Spinoffs like Mario Rabbids have cartoon guns, but they aren't shooters.

Well, we had Yoshi's Safari on SNES.

Then why not third person shooter Mario instead? At least we can still see Mario's face.

Or, they could just do what they did with Doomguy and have a shot of his face at the bottom of the screen.

That too. Forgot about it.

it simply isnt necessary. Splatoon and Metroid already cover Nintendo's presence in the shooter genre. and i think a better way to bring the Mario series to the FPS genre would be to make Luigi's Mansion 3 for the Switch and provide an optional first person mode. just a thought

Is mario + rabbids cannon? Maybe they can add those weapons for another Ubisoft Super Mario game Spinoff? And call it Super mario turtle warfare?
