Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Kimishima about Nintendo in China 'would like to realize this as quickly as possible'

Arena of Valor is already planned to launch on Switch, now bring Overwatch, some exclusives like Zelda and Mario and some battle royale game and the Switch will have a good launch.

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima commented on plans for China. Currently the Big N is looking into how it can have more of a foothold there and is “consulting with various other parties on aspects we cannot tackle alone.” Kimishima added that “would like to realize this as quickly as possible”.

Kimishima’s full words:

China has a huge population and I believe there are many people who want to enjoy the forms of play and games made by Nintendo, which is why we continue to study business opportunities even though our products are unavailable there at the present time. We would like to see the people of China also experience Nintendoʼs forms of play and games that people in other countries enjoy now. How best to achieve this is a subject we are working through point by point, consulting with various other parties on aspects we cannot tackle alone. I would like to realize this as quickly as possible, but there is nothing I can say at this time about activities that will start within the year.

Regarding the expansion of our smart-device business in China, it would be better to collaborate with local carriers rather than go it alone, but as of now there is nothing I can say on this topic either. That said, I hope that consumers in China in the future will be able to enjoy our games just like in other regions.

I think they really plan on making this work out instead of just throwing the switch as early as possible. Hopefully it will be this year and also I wish them the best since no big companies is doing really well there but with killer apps and good marketing I think Switch can do really well.

If they build this correctly, the Switch can do so well there. Mobile gaming in Chine is huge, so it'd be interesting to see the performance of a dedicated handheld there.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Meh, just a bunch of hopes and dreams for now ...

Switch won't be able to get traction at $299 in China and Nintendo is far behind in their localization or domestic efforts ... (keeping their $60 price tag for games is not acceptable either)

Aren't these the same reasons people said the Switch wouldn't succeed a year ago?

Oh yeah, that's one of the things people still cling onto ? That's getting old ...

Do you argue that Switch can succeed in China at it's current price point ? Just FYI, Switch hasn't released in China yet and Tencent's first game for the Switch, Arena of Valor isn't even localized in chinese so how do you expect Nintendo to succeed in that region ?

Why do you assume so easily that success will translate across regions ? (How did PS4 turn out for Sony in Japan ?)

The Switch is different enough from PC's to have a real crack at the PC dominated market there. Mobile gaming is massive too... I feel as though the Switch has a better chance than PlayStation and Xbox combined.

I wonder when it'd even release though. I may go to China next year, it'd be pretty cool to be able to play with some others while I'm there.

Yeah, they definitely should go for it. I think they can find success in China, even if it ends up being small. There's too much potential in a big market area to simply pass on it.
