I get that, but I don’t understand why someone would willingly want to scrap an additional hour of light in the summertime...why would you want the sun to come up an hour earlier in summer and go down an hour earlier?

We could just get up an hour earlier. It doesn't make sense that the middle of the day for most people is at 3 or 4 PM.

So you’d be ok with work starting at 7 instead of 8 am?! Even in winter?

Why not change the UK to CET (Central European Time)? Wny must we change to UK time? We are on GMT +1 and not GMT, we have never been on GMT.

CET was introduced by the Germans in 1940. The actual time here is GMT + 10-20 minutes.

For obvious reasons that kind of time can never be used. It would mean that while in Ostende it is 4:00 PM, in Brussels it would be 4:07 PM and at the same time in Arlon it would be 4:12 PM give or take a few minutes. In our modern world this would be extremely confusing and totally unpractical which is why time is rounded up to the hour, everywhere.

Also GMT here in Belgium would be a problem. Right now in June the sun sets at about 10 PM, if we stop using summer time and stay on winter time all year round it means the sun will set in June at 9 PM but if we start using GMT it means the sun will set at 8 PM in June. Only vampires could be happy about that

And to make things worse right now in June the sun rises at around 4:30 AM, if we stay on winter time it means the sun will rise at 3:30 AM and if we move to GMT the sun will start rising in June at 2:30 AM... See how this would make GMT not the best choice over here? 2:30 AM is not a time to have the sun rising over here, in my opinion.

I wish it was like that here, as long as they use the Winter hours though as that's the standard time.

Don't overreact please....They decided to put it in question and debate about it during the next years and several ongoing decisions....nothing is set in stone yet and it's possible nothing will change.

I would hate the decision actually, since we in Germany wouldn't have long summer evenings anymore. If anything I'd want the winter time to die. I never understood why they make us change the clock in winter so it's dark at 5pm already instead of 6pm, which is early enough. I'm aware that's a local opinion though.

Where do you guys come from and what is your opinion on the matter?

Well, wintertime is the 'natural time' though while summer time is the 'artificial' one. So if any of the two does get scrapped it'll be summer.

Also some days in summer the sun is almost out until 10pm. I wouldn't mind it setting an hour earlier. But then again I live under the roof with no aircondition, being able to let the cold night air in is a blessing.

Why not? If we change timezones, 8 AM would become 7 AM.

I wasn't saying that each city should have its own time, that would be ridiculous. My point was, that our time is closer to the GMT than to the CET.

The sun rises at 5:30 AM in June, not 4:30. So that would become 3:30 AM in GMT and wintertime, which makes just as much sense as sunset at 8 PM.

I am a late sleeper and more often than not I have insomnia and I can tell you that at the end of June during the longest days of the year, the first light can be seen at around 4:30 AM with full day light at 5 AM so like I said if we move to GMT on top of using winter time all year round, the first light will be seen at around 2:30 AM with a full day light at 3 AM.

So If they moved to an all year round winter time I would be ok with it but GMT? I don't think it would be a good idea, in my opinion even if we are naturally closer to it than to CET.

I know that there's already light before 5 AM, but the sun rises at 5:30. It's also still light at 11 PM, long after the sun has set.

I prefer the way things are currently. In summer I'm awake at 9PM but I'm not at 5AM, so I would lose an hour of daylight.

Ah shit I actually did the exact same thing for work once! :P It can take me days, sometimes even a week or two, to adjust to the new timezone, lol.

Lol, nice. Yeah, when she pointed it out to me and saw my surprise, she asked "Is there no one to remind you of these things?"
I guess not. lol

These excuses should not work at all. In case you did not notice we live in a time when all our clocks change automatically to the correct time. Whether computers, smart phones, tablets, televisions etc... They all change on their own.

The only clock I must change manually twice a year is the one on my microwave oven.

I'd be happy with this, DST makes meeting across zones hard in current system where who and when the changes happen vary. Having a set time zone where London is always the same difference from New York would be very convenient.
