Forums - Website Topics - VGChartz - User Reviews

I've added a place on the front page, for displaying User Reviews in an effort to hopefully encourage the community to write more!! User Reviews are one of my favorite features of our database (so long as they are GOOD reviews, of course!!) because they give a "community perspective" to the games that are listed - sure, having hard, accurate data is required of any good database, but it's original material drawn up by our community that makes the database unique and gives life to each entry.

For those that were unaware - all users have the ability to write up a user review for a game. On the game page, you'll note the Review Scores box with links for Critics and Community - "Critics" is reserved for submitting scores from outside websites (IGN, Gamespot, etc.), while "Community" is where you the user, can submit a review for a game!

Just click the "Community" link (if it's not already selected), and then the link that will read either "Be the first to review" or "Add a review" - you can then begin writing out your game review. There are fields for a "heading" which is what appears on the front page, a "summary" which is a short preview of your article and which will appear on the review listing page, and a rich-text box which is used for the body of your report (much like a forum post, you can use the rich-text editor to insert screenshots, or anything else you think will enhance your review).

Once you're done writing up your article, you will notice four different slider functions for scoring: Presentation, Gameplay, Value, and Overall - these are all rated on a scale of 0-10 (tenth decimal place is allowed). You don't have to use the graphical sliders for your scores - you can simply type them in, as well.

And that's all there is to it!!!!

Once posted, the community will then have the opportunity to "rate" your review (a simple Thumbs Up/Down option is available to all logged in users, at the end of the review) - all reviews that have a "positive" overall review rating average, will have their Overall Score averaged into the "Community Review Score".

Lastly - the front page review listing has a filter (much like the forum listing does), such that if you hover over the "Latest User Reviews" you'll be able to sort and view "Top Rated User Reviews" (this is sorted by average community rating with a minimum of five votes).

As you may or may not already know, there are badges revolving around User Reviews and even more badges still to come! The goal here is to encourage as many of you as possible, to get to writing those reviews - I am open to hearing any other ideas you all might have, in regards to finding ways to motivate our community to write as many of these reviews as possible. In the meantime, please take some time and start reading some of the reviews that are already out there - you will very likely find some excellent articles!! While you're there, don't forget to rate those users and show the authors some love for all their hard work!!!

User reviews, huh?

So which score would you give me?

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

This is cool and all, but I wanna make a little complaint here. I was just checking Twilight Princess sales data earlier today, and I wanted to see how it sold over the years... but that feature is still missing. I assume you guys are already working on this, but I just wanna say that should be your top priority over anything else, because it's just really annoying when we can't check stuff we could a couple of months ago.

Not to be disrespectful, I know it sounded like that. I really like this whole review stuff and I'm gonna write loads of them... eventually. (...) I promise! Hopefully.

Edit: and well, since I'm doing all this complaining and stuff, I could complain about the reviews as well, because why not? I'd really like it if you could make reviews without scores, and if you could add images to your review (not sure if this is already possible to be honest).

Edit 2: also, it'd be cool if there was a tab for reviews on every user page, that way you can easily look through all of a user's reviews.

It says the game is a masterpiece, which isn't true even if your review is.

The tools need some work. I doublechecked that I used the sliders for the subcategories, and I did, but they are displayed as 0.0.

Well, since we want to get "real" and all - I figure I should probably point out, we're all really just volunteers around here. Put another way, if I were a paid employee and my boss said, "You need to do this..." - well obviously, it would be the VERY first thing I did!!!

But...

...I'm not a paid employee. And so, since there isn't a financial incentive to get me to do certain things, then a different incentive is needed to motivate - and in this case, what motivates me is building cool new features which I think will bring life to the game database and those which I think the community will enjoy using.

None of this being said disrespectfully, mind you - your post was respectful as is mine, and I'm just telling you straight up how it is around here. There are TONS of things around here that need to be fixed and/or improved, many of which are probably FAR more important than the user reviews...   ...but they bore me and they tend not to get the creative juices flowing - and therefore, they don't get my highest priority or attention.

Yes - I'll get around to fixing and adding more sales tools for you. But tonight, I had no interest in visiting that part of the code - tonight, I was interested in enhancing a feature which I really enjoy seeing used.

Feel free to add a review without a score - I don't believe it will stop you. But it will conflict with the point of having a 'community average score' (which is sort of the purpose in the first place), and technically speaking, if you happen to get enough 'up votes' it will probably treat your lack of score as a 'zero' and totally screw with the community average... :(

...as I said in my opening - you are free to insert screenshots in your review. It's the same exact rich-text editing box that we use in the forums. So whatever you can do here, you can do there. :)

I'll check that out - it's been a LONG time since I looked at that part of the code, so maybe something got knocked out of whack...   ...maybe even from the latest site upgrade the other night :(

Edit: I see the scores are still set (if I go into the "Edit Review" for yours), they're just displaying as '0' which is fine - that's a MUCH easier fix!!! ;)

Oh... I thought we were reviewing users...

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.
