Sony wanted to give God of War a much longer rest after previous entry Ascensiondisappointed critically and commercially. The latest issue of Game Informer reveals that the company needed serious convincing in order to give the franchise another shot. “A lot of people throughout the organisation wanted [God of War] to sleep and rest,” Sony Santa Monica boss Shannon Studstill told the magazine.

It was down to God of War II director Cory Barlog to come up with a pitch that could revitalise interest in the franchise, among both fans and the publisher itself. “Even the first pitches I gave, there was that, ‘You've really got to convince me that we should do another one,’” he explained, referring to the internal temperature for the franchise at the time.

I'm glad cause I was with Sony on this. But seeing how different this game is I'm happy and excited.

PS4 and PC gaming

PC Specs:
AMD Ryzen 9 3900x
Zotac Nvidia RTX 2070 Super
32GB DDR4 Corsair Vengence Ram 3200 mhz
1TB Samsung Qvo SSD
Corsair Spec-Delta Case
Asus ROG B450-F Motherboard

It only happened because the other sci-fi game Santa Monica was making to be their main thing didn't turn out well enough for them to invest big on it, so they either would spend another 5 years without a game or speed things up to 3 years going back to GoW and getting assured big money quicker, which they needed after cancealling an AAA game.
Anyway, it's turning out damn well and I'm probably enjoying this game a freaking lot, so heh, keep screwing other games SM xD

In all honesty, I really like the way Sony doesn't live or die based on a few enormous IP and that they're willing to step away from something if the idea or timing isn't right.

Wasn't Ascension launching just before the PS4 popped in? I feel that is a 'things may not sell that well' scenario that most would accept

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

But when they pitch them a bis The Last of Us with Kratos in it, they couldn't simply resist, huh ...

I agree, too. I was ready for Kratos to end. Feel the same way about Master Chief.

Maybe the new one will surprise me, but fatigue of the character is the main reason I'm not too excited for the game.

Owner of PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Switch, PS Vita, and 3DS

I'd still rather have a different game than God Of War 4. I just can't imagine the gameplay being fun, but I could be wrong. Plus it fits a bit too similarly with the whole cinematic approach Sony has done.

I don't think that's the motivation. I think it's a case of most of their IP not having legs enough to span 30 years.

They never really tried to do so though ...
