Forums - Website Topics - Organising A New GameDB Admin Team

As many of you already know, Talon is currently hard at work bringing back the old site game database.

Things are moving pretty rapidly, and although he's still a ways off making it go live (a couple of weeks is the current ETA), I want to start putting together a new GameDB Admin team so that we're ready to go as soon as he pushes the button.

The new GameDB will initially be much like the old one from the black version of VGChartz, with some additions and changes, and of course adopting the current colour scheme so it fits with the rest of the site. A lot of the content is going to be retained (game entries, sales data, release dates, reviews, and some other elements), but a lot will be lost in the transfer or will look quite ugly so will need replacing/updating (e.g. game banners, box arts, and descriptions for newer titles).

For that we'll need a new and active GameDB Admin team. Its task will be to update the GameDB and to approve/reject submissions made by regular users, much like the old GameDB Admin team.

Anyone who's interested in being part of the new GameDB Admin team please post expressing your interest in this thread. A few notes before you do so:

  • Priority will go to proven users (long-time users or highly active newer users), because a rogue GameDB Admin could cause a big headache and create a lot of extra work for the other GameDB Admins and for the Sales Team.
  • GameDB Admins need to have an eye for detail and high standards, and be able to follow rules for submitting content to the database. This is very important; all changes made to the database need to be accurate.
  • The old GameDB Admin team is being reset entirely because many are no longer active. Any old GameDB Admins who want to be part of the new team will go to the top of the list.
  • Being a Discord user is a big plus. It's helped a tonne being able to discuss and organise things as a staff over Discord since we started making big changes this last month. On a slightly related note, anyone is welcome to join VGC's public Discord server, which has become a sort of official IM for the community - just ask anyone who uses it and they can send you an invite (most staff are on there, so asking a member of staff is a pretty surefire way to get a quick invite).

...just to expand on this a bit - there are currently two versions of the GameDB at the moment. There is the version that was being maintained before the break-off to Gamewise, and there is the current version which we see today. The goal has been to merge both versions of the database together so that we have one complete set.

The good news with this, is that all of the original database information has been preserved and is readily available - it was an extremely complete database at the time, so games entered before the Gamewise cut-over are fairly fleshed out. On the flip-side of that, games that were entered after the Gamewise cut-over, have very little data stored in the database (this is a direct side effect of the cut-over) - while we have the most basic of information available for nearly every game (title, console, release dates, publisher, etc.), the rest of the information that bulks out a game entry and makes it such an invaluable resource, simply isn't here (it's over at Gamewise).

Since Brett has given us the blessing to disconnect from Gamewise, it means that there will be a WHOLE lot of work available to you all, in order to build up this database to what it should be!! Older games (Wii, PS3, 360, etc.) are literally packed with goodies (FAQs, cheatcodes, maps, trophies, etc.) which I think you will all appreciate - while a large portion of current generation games will look naked in comparison, and will be begging for attention from the community!

As part of this process, we'll be bringing back the VG$$, as well (no - this is NOT legal currency!!!) as it's all still tied nice and neatly into the entire game update submission process. For those that have no idea what that is, I'll post a separate topic on it at some point, when this all comes closer to fruition.  :)

This is great news!!!

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Good one.

I'd love it if Oliist came back. Can't see it happening though; I think he was very angry about what Brett did to the database.
