Forums - General Discussion - Netflix's awful match system

Which rating system do you prefer?

The original five star rating system 62 93.94%

The new thumbs up/down and matching system 4 6.06%

Total:66

People still aren't going to watch what they don't want to watch.  Simplifying the voting does not encourage more people to watch crap shows.  For me, it actually makes me not want to give some shows I've never heard of a chance even if it is highly rated because I do not trust the rating at all.

One of the main reasons I started using Netflix was because the rating system could introduce me to shows I've never seen before that I enjoyed, and the suggested rating was almost always spot on, and, if not, at least I felt it would make my ratings more accurate when I gave it a lower rating.  It was customizable.  This new system is NOT customizable and feels very much like I'm giving into someone else's agenda rather than my own, not something I want out of a "service."

I've debated to stop using Netflix over it, but there is not a good competitor with a similar system and database of media with a rating system like their original.  Hulu may be the closest, but it is very hard to rate titles there since the apps do not have full functionality.

The original system blows chunks, but compared to the new polished turd they are trying to shove down our throats it was awesome. Personally Netflix is borderline as to whether I keep it at this point. The constantly changing of categories (I know what I like, don't friggen try to shove crap down my throat and try and show me genres cause you think you know what I like, let me just select what genre's I see on my devices) and the new system really have weakened the offering considerably for me.

But why would certain things getting bad ratings be the reason why? Surely, people will just thumbs down it now instead giving it a very bad ratio anyway, just like before? I don't understand why stuff like Amy Schumer's terrible standup special being roasted is relevant to the change.

5 star rating system is still there on the Wii U because they probably didn't bother releasing any updates for it on the Wii U. So I haven't really encountered the just thumbs up and down system. Seems way too limited.

How does this effect your viewing? What am I reading?

I already said this holds no significant impact, but I don't understand why they'd make something much worse than it flaws.

Personally I feel Netflix has been going downhill for awhile now. I rarely find things to watch, and when I do they aren't kept for very long. Was definitely worth it before, but luckily I don't have to pay for it anymore anyways.

I honestly just wanted to watch One Punch Man and a few other shows. I'll probably stick to Crunchyroll/Funimation and Amazon now. Much better library than Netflix.

Movies selection is usually shit ever since they lost the Starz agreement years ago but some of their shows are pretty good like Narcos, Orange is the New Black and I also like some shows that they took over like Trailer Park Boys and Longmire.

The new system hides the percentage of thumbs up and thumbs down from you, all it does is recommend titles it thinks you will like based on what you have thumbed up or down previously. So effectively, they have hidden the fact that several of their original shows got bad reviews from users, you can only see that they have bad reviews if you go to the Netflix website and look at the user reviews under the details tab now, which you can't access from any of the various Netflix apps afaik.

Oh wow, that's terrible. Huge strike against Netflix for this ... Unfortunately I doubt they'd ever reverse it. :/ What a misstep on their part.

I can see why it would bother some people. Me personally.....not fussed

The only time I ever rated anything with their star system, is if I thought something was really really awesome, and then I always gave it 5 stars. For everything else, I never bothered to rate it anyway, cus frankly it wasn't worth the extra clicks to do so imo. So really, all I was ever doing was giving a thumbs up to certain things even under the old system.

This is basically the same way I used it.
