Yes it did do something right, it released on a console that has very few games worth playing. And almost no multiplayer shooters to choose from. |
It did other things right besides your opinion, dominate Japan. With the PS4 outselling the Wii U there, you'd think that games like FFXV, MGSV, all the Tales games, etc. would've sold at least a million each or so. But Splatoon manages to do just that and create a boom in a struggling home console industry in Japan. How many home console exclusives in Japan have sold a million this gen? Not a lot compared to what it used to be but it shows a lot how Splatoon made its presence known when it continued selling really well in Japan until the Wii U became limited in supply before its discontinuation. Now it's branching out to be a franchise with its own merchandise, food, collectables, Callie and Marie vocaloid concerts, manga, and it's own collab with a popular anime/manga called Squid Girl. Now, Splatoon 2 is dominating the COMG charts and looks to continue it's predecessor's incredible success. And I would like to know what makes an 81 "average" to you. You must have at least tried it right?
