Exactly how much difference is there between the PS/XB and the Switch?

Forums - Gaming Discussion - Exactly how much difference is there between the PS/XB and the Switch?

Frankly I feel this a question that no one has really answered.

The fact is that people keep saying that 1st party games can't run on the device, but how far is the Switch from it's fellow consoles anyway. How Snake Pass and Lego City Undercover ran on the Switch compared to the other two makes me question just how big the difference is.

The Switch is stronger than the Wii U with better archeticture after all, so I can't help but feel people are exaggerating the gap.

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

The issue is that before we even get into the power differences, the architectural difference already means that third parties will have to make a specialized build for the switch assuming their lead platform is ps4/x1/PC.

Games like SnakePass and Lego City Undercover aren't very demanding games and LCU already ran on the wiiU so of course, them running on the switch isn't that difficult. But when you have games like Mass Effect, BF and etc. Those games will have tons of issues running on the switch due to a) architectural differences and b) performance differences.

As for power, it is hard to judge since Nvidia Tflop =/= Amd Tflop but there are various limiting factors none the less such has much lower ram, memory bandwidth, cpu cores, storage requirements and etc. So make no mistake, the gap is large enough for big third parties to consider whether or not porting to the switch will be worth it cause if say reworking everything to run for the switch takes 40sh million dollars (like with Pachter's example), they would need to sell over 1-2 million for it to be worth it.

397 Gflops vs 1840 Gflops.

Theres no exaggeration going on.

Its just aparently it doesnt matter all that much... you run abit lower resolution, turn off a few effects ect.

People dont care that much.  Its why people that believe scorpio is going to make a massive differnce are fooling themselves.

Also Snake Pass & Lego City Undercover are kinda horrible ports, to use as compairisons.

They put more work into the switch versions than they did the other systems.

I'm not tech savvy in terms of numbers but I think the gap is clearly noticeable to the average/casual gamer. Granted, Nintendo does a fantastic job of working around relatively weaker systems with beautiful art direction but I mean if you put (HERE IT COMES) HZD/Uncharted 4 next to BotW/mario Odyssey, you can see just the raw difference in the graphics, textures, details, etc. If we're talking power or performance of games, Switch games have to be less demanding so I think most Switch games would probably perform better than a PS4/Xb1 game which can be very taxing on the systems. If Switch games keep staying conservative on demand that their games put on the console, I think all 3 will run their games with solid performance. Also, I don't think you're gonna sway anybody with Snake Pass and Lego city comparisons.

Again, I don't know jack shit about nothing but that's my hot take.

It's a Tegra X1, there's only so much it can possibly do. Basically, the Switch is a bit of a souped up Wii U and nothing more. It won't touch vanilla Xbone or PS4, let alone Pro and Scorpio. The games that don't look different are not graphics intensive games, but any that are will look very different on Switch.

Artstyle + cel shadeing ect, can hide alot of faults, but like the nature stuff is alot better looking in HZD, so are the characters.

Guys  nothing against you and i know you are just trying to point out a difference, but seeing those games against one another yet again... i can already feel the console/fanboy war thats about to start just beacuse of this comparision... should have used other games.

To the OP: Captain Yuris post says it all, you can put a /thread at the end of it.

Right now, the best way to tell the difference is by looking at Dragon Quest XI *edit* Heroes.

This should say everything. Performance seems to take small hits on Switch, the shadows are harsh, the lighting flat, the textures are lower res, there is less foliage, worse geometry, ect. That's not to mention I don't really think Dragon Quest is all that demanding of a game, but more so than LCU and the snake game.

That is DQ Heroes not DQXI. DQ Heroes is on PSvita ans PS3. The Switch port is a quick port. Not the best game to use as a demonstration.

My mistake, lol. But yeah. I still believe it's a far better indicator than Zelda and HZD.
