Forums - Sales Discussion - Zelda beats Horizon Zero Dawn to No.1 in Japan

Horizon won the UK and Zelda one Japan. Crazy that guerilla of all developers could release a new Ip and their first RPG to rival the sales of a household name like Zelda.

Not when you consider the install bases... lol

The fact Zelda is one of the only in demand launch Switch games means it's going to have a crazy high attach rate.

Winning for Horizon wasn't guaranteed.  We knew Zelda would sell well.  But did we know a first attempt of an RPG by guerilla games of all devs could beat that?  Definitely not.  Horizon WW must have beat Zelda by a lot.  Sales probably around 3m by now.  Definitely way above expectations.

All I read was "Horizon beats Zelda"*
Good job, Horizon!

You're quite late to the party.

Congrats to Zelda and Switch!

Really goes to show how dead the PS4 is in Japan.

That said, this showing in Japan for Nintendo is still pretty darn impressive... no need to refuse them credit for selling a bunch of games on a brand new console in a country where console ownership and willingness to pay for more expensive game-centric hardware has been on the decline for quite some time.

Because Horizon was outsold by an established franchise? And 30K is dead there now?

Time have changed, I suppose.

I suppose I mean comparatively dead :P

A console as popular as the PS4 with a hit like Horizon would have been selling a heck of a lot more titles in previous generations.

A console as popular as the PS4? Worldwide, I agree. But in Japan, while "dead" is far from term I'd use, it's not doing anything extradordinary. I'd say it's a testament to Horizon more than Zelda that they can even be compared at all.

That's exactly what I mean, PS4 is the king console and its presence in Japan is minimal. Compared to previous generations, console sales are just sad in Japan at this point. I keep hoping it will turn around but there's no signs that it will.

Still, I'm impressed by Nintendo's sales... while it may be a hybrid (a concept I imagine that appeals to Japanese gamers more than a stationary one), it certainly isn't priced like a handheld; the sales, overall, are still quite impressive given it released on a dead console and a brand new one.

I'd say Horizon sold above expectations sure. But you're kidding yourself if you think it's going to outsell BOTW once the Switch gets more consoles into homes.
