Yeah, I rarely feel the NEED to play games nowadays but the same has happened with all of my other consumptions bar music.

But once i dive in, I still love them.

there is a storyline and plot in each of those games you named. Maybe you just don't like story driven games or just the story in general.

It happens. It's normal. It's called getting older.

I will give Nintendo credit in the sense that the Switch is really good for this, it's really easy to pick it up and just play anywhere, there's a certain joy to that. Together with Zelda it's a good combo.

Getting older is not the reason in and of itself. It's more to do with the fact that when you've been alive a long time, things don't wow you as much because you've seen and done most things. If something truly new and mind blowing came out, it wouldn't matter if someone was 80, they're going to enjoy it.

I've gone through similar spells, just take a small break :)

I know what you mean in some respects. As I've grown older I've become a lot less patient and much more selective with my games. Maybe its because I'm slowly realizing I don't have infinite time in this world, but if a game doesn't really grip me within the first hour or 2, I'm out. And I'm noticing that happening more and more. Maybe it's me becoming more picky and bitter older jaded gamer, or maybe it's because games are getting worse. Or maybe both, who knows..

When I was a teenager I used to power through games I felt I *should* have liked but I no longer waste my time doing that. Because of this I end up buying far fewer games than I used to, especially at full price. And even many of those I do buy, I end up reselling.

But with that said, the few games I still DO find I really enjoy, I still go all out with them. Gears franchise, Minecraft, Oblivion, Overwatch, Mario, a lot of retro games, etc.. Oh and when it comes to Zelda BoW, it's freaking amazing.. Its one of the very few games in recent history I truly find it hard to put down (especially single player). If the new Zelda doesn't do it for ya, you may want to consider trying to take a long break from gaming, because believe me, I'm somewhat in your shoes but I'm still enjoying the hell out of Zelda.

I thought the same thing at some point but then realized being tired after work has something to do with it. On my days off, I tried to have some gameplay session after waking up and noticed a huge improvement in my desire to play video games.

I went thru the same spells last year. I couldn't bring myself to play games much. Although I have every console of recent times in my possession, it wasn't enough to entice me to play. I took a few months to just relax from gaming (but still was active here and on gaming news) and it did me some wonders. Don't know why I needed that break, but it helped.

Felt that way with Gen 7. World of Warcraft > all at the time plus plenty of console disappointments. Luckily Gen 8 is much funner.

Yeah, hated Gen 7. It was so boring x~x compared to other gens, imo. Gen 8 is a big improvement

Happens to the best of us. One day, you're looking at all of your games and hardware and you don't want to play anything except Candy Crush. A month later, you can't get enough.

I think part of the problem is that we're spoiled. Too many good games. Christmas comes every day. Take a break, only buy what you really want to play. It'll feel special, again.

I felt that way about gaming in general back in the late 1990s (which were my mid to late teen years) in part because, to be honest, I had difficulty adapting to the standardization of 3D initially, having grown up on sprites (though also because I had developed other priorities at that stage of life, like boys, music, getting my driver's license, wing chun, and the coolness that was TV for girls back then (Buffy, Friends, Sabrina, etc.)). I've sort of fallen in and out of love with gaming in fits and starts ever since. I've never quit playing, but gaming has been at this stage a high-priority hobby for me and at that a low-priority interest.

I'd say my lowest level of interest overall was reached around the turn of the current decade because it just felt like gaming was not meant for me. I couldn't relate to the popular games and franchises like GTA, God of War, Gears of War, BioShock, Red Dead Redemption, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Hitman, Dishonored, No More Heroes, Lollipop Chainsaw, or even Little King's Story, and casual gaming on the Wii had only limited appeal to me as well. It didn't feel like there was much of a place for yours truly in gaming anymore. However, the popularization of Steam has rekindled my interest in this medium in recent years, as it provides easy access to a ton of games that are very heartfelt...and (speaking to some personal bias here) often aesthetically resemble the types of games I grew up on. I find that Steam also produces a fair number of games that are thematically pertinent to real life, not just escapisms, and, to me anyway, that matters.

Properly commercial gaming ("AAA" gaming) has also improved somewhat in the current console generation, IMO, both in design terms and in terms of representation. However, I usually find that so-called AAA games are just not very substantive and tend to be more focus group tested and gimmicky; more so than games used to be. It's been that way for a long time now. But it's getting a little better though, I think. Horizon: Zero Dawn is slightly above average, IMO, while Nier: Automata is WAY above average thematically. I think we've got a lot to look forward to even from more commercial games! I'm actually feeling a little optimistic about the medium as a whole these days.
