Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is Breath of the Wild really that good?

massive amount of trolls on in the user reviews on Metacritic, particularly for Nintendo releases. There are copy and pasted negative reviews and things that say things like "omg the graphics are N64 level". Take a look scrolling for a minute and you'll see that the negative reviews have an insane amount of trolls

Digital Foundry said that the frame drops are about equally prevelant between the Wii U and the docked Switch, except they happen at different areas. The issue is likely caused by memory management.

The Switch version in handheld mode has no drops.

So the Switch version is the definitive in both framerate and resolution.

That's the first report I've heard of that.  Regarding framerate, here's what the general consensus seems to be, from best to worst:  Switch handheld, Wii U, Switch docked.

In any case, the framerate issues are significant. I just can't see how a reviewer could give the game a perfect score, even if everything else is perfect.  Because, by virtually all reports, framerate is not even close to perfect.

A 10/10 does not imply a perfect game (there is no such thing.) It is just the best score one can get when rated against other games that one might buy. Plenty of games with performance issues have gotten excellent scores. A recent example was The Witcher 3.

I don't recommend getting a console for one game.

CPU: Ryzen 7950X

Gaming Console: PLAYSTATION 5

Don't write things off as just trolls. From the honest reviews i've seen, what happens is that the game became a typical open world game. Light on story, open ended and with repetitive tasks.

I myself am a bit burned out of that type of game. I don't dislike them if i'm on the right mood, but it can get quite pointless and boring.
I am pretty sure that the highest scores are not honest, if not only for the technical issues. But it certainly isn't a game as revolutionary as Ocarina of time. Whoever tells you that is just trying too hard.

It is what it is. You know it won't be a bad game, but don't go expecting it to be ocarina the second coming. This type of game existed before Zelda did it.

Why don't you wait until you've played it before making such comments and passing those kind of judgements?

I've only played it for a few hours, the Plateau area, thus far. But so far, yes, it is pretty good. It's shitty not to be able to roll anymore, but being able to run and jump and climb practically anything, kinda makes up for that. And for all I know you can gain a roll move later, who knows?

It's a huge game world, with a very open structure. There are specific things the game WANTS you to do, in some kind of order, but you don't HAVE to. And unlike most open world type games, there isn't this huge, rigid quest-tree you're beholden to. You really can kinda of just do whatever, you an approach playing the game however you feel like. There's just no guarantee you're going to succeed.

So I've run into a few frustrations, like the Rock Golem boss. But overall, I'm enjoying the experience so far. The jury is still out, as I need to play it a lot more to get the FULL experience. But it may well wind up being my favorite 3D Zelda, we'll see.

The metacritic user score really seems a bit biased/manipulated by trolls. One can tell by the fact that the game has got a high percentage of negative reviews, but only a very small percentage of mixed user reviews.

That said, the review scores from Amazon (at least german Amazon, didn't look at Amazon US) suggest that the 98 from metacritic is indeed a bit overrated as well:
Both the Switch and the WiiU-version are rated at around 4.3/5, and both versions have hardly any 1-star reviews that one would expect from trolls.

A score around 90 may be justified, but 98 really seems overrated.

Not really, but im personally suffering from open world exhaustion.

I feel myself validated that most of the points in the reviews come from nostalgia and the brand. The washed out graphics, 20 fps drops and the issue with the weapon inventory already easily disqualifies it from a 10/10. I'm not even that deep into the game.

It could still get a 9/10 but perfect score is just ridiculous.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I'm sure not everybody will like it. It seems to be liked by most people though, unlike the last few Zeldas which had divisive opinions.

You mean players score like this!? Trolls, salty fanboys and Nintendo haters.
