Forums - Website Topics - Discuss: Harsher rules on non-gaming threads

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=225342&page=28

After reading this thread, i realized something- many of the political threads have become a mess.

It's to the point where most simply aren't enjoyable anymore. Too much fighting, inability to stay on topic, a lot of ignorance and flaming comments, etc. i used to participate and create a lot of political threads, but I'm beginning to see that many people abuse the non-gaming nature of them and use the 'freedom of speech' to say some questionable things.

Solution? Harsher rules and penalties on people who violate the rules.

It may seem useless, but I think enforcing rules more will prevent anymore issues regarding political threads. I certainly don't think they should disappear, as a decent amount of people on here certainly enjoy participating in them (I don't, but it's your opinion that matters most). Instead of wishing to eradicate all political threads, perhaps we should simply manage them better, have mods dedicated to dealing with trolls/flame baiters, etc.

We can always have rules set out specifically for politic threads as well. Here's an example:

1. Threads made concerning an event must be sourced- you can't make a thread saying Hillary Clinton has raped 20 men and run away with a smirk. Unless it's simply a discussion about something (for example someone wanting to talk about border control), we should promote people to put sources to try to prevent false information.

2. 1, 2, 3 rule- for every ban you receive due to a political-related thread, the length increases by a week. Basically, it'll go 1 week, 2 week, 3 week, etc. People will think more before posting hopefully

I  don't want to turn VGChartz into a preschool, but I certainly think that the amount of 'bad' political threads we receive are harming the community by pushing away new users. We can always improve it for the better. Heck, we can try to promote different types of threads. I decided to try to make a thread about art, but it failed horrible (shoutout to the one person who actually submitted something). I'd love to see VGChartz also push for new topics to become an interest in this community.

Let the mods do their job as they see fit.

The issue with requiring people to "source" their material - is the source its self.

People aren't making up stuff like "Threads made concerning an event must be sourced- you can't make a thread saying Hillary Clinton has raped 20 men and run away with a smirk."

They are reading it on Breitbart, InfoWars, Dredge Report, or any numerous amount of fake(and I actually do mean fake) websites.

So instead of them saying it, they are just quoting someone else saying it. Without actual fact checking and credible sources - "citing your sources" means nothing.

Yeah, I guess I haven't thought about that.

if VGChartz were to make a banlist on sources, then I'm sure it'd only bring trouble.

I'm not sure if doing something about this or just leaving it is smarter.

Just get rid of political topics in general. They're fucking awful. I mean, they're fun to mess with people in -but more often than not they turn into pools of shit. I've advocated the banning of political threads since forever and will until it happens.

Why not ignore them altogether, works for me?

If you ask me, I don't think it's our job to regulate where you get your political sources from as long as they follow the forum rules. Coincidentally, "fake news" tends to be clickbait and generate controversy and flamewars that leads to the threads getting locked.

The issue overall is that politics is much more personal and we don't really have a dedicated politics mod, it's also not really a position you can force someone into either.

At least take them off the front page, we've done it before to other threads. I didn't come to a gaming forum to see 1/4 of the threads be about Trump.

only exception to this is how video game prices might increase because of taxes on imports. Otherwise, I agree with you fully

I really want to get that section off of the front page.

Just wondering, but who has the final say on what goes on the front page?  Do moderators vote on it or what?

With many people wishing for it to happen, I think we should have a mod have a survey/thread to see whether it should be done or not.

I dont mind the political threads, they do need more dedicated moderation tho. Althogether I do agree that  non-gaming thread shouldnt show up in the front page.
