Forums - Gaming Discussion - HDR Is Coming To All 40 million PS4s Next Week

I have no idea how this is going to work. But I hope it works well.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

The compromise with the OG Ps4/Slim is that due to HDMI 1.4 limitations...you are relying on your UHD TV to upscale with its internal scaler...which adds frames of lag.

Upscaling is better when done on the hardware level before output onto the display...so that the display receives a 4K signal.

Also people should be shopping 'HDR Premium' labeled UHD TV's panels to benefit from 10bit wide color gamut HDR.

If buying something 'HDR Pro' or Samsung KU/ LG UF lower costseries ...the HDR is stil handicapped within an 8bit panel's 16.7 million colors...as opposed to 1 BILLION colors . Big difference.

What kind of price are we talking for a TV with and without that feature?

Let's take a 55" TV for arguments sake.

So still more than double to add HDR

Ok because I was looking at these 3 TV'S.  Would I be right in saying the cheaper $800 one doesn't meet the UHD Premium specs but the more expensive ones do?

I assume you mean these 3?

$800 one is 8 bit http://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/5df45ca
$1200 one is also 8 bit http://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/d70e3ee
$1700 one, drumroll, also 8 bit http://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/9a79401

None of those meet UHD premium spec.

You are clearly ignoring Sony magic. The PS4 will magically make all tv's HDR compatable

What about monitors? Are there monitors out there that suppose true HDR?

I don't really have room for a bigger TV, don't want to sit closer, and I don't want to get rid of a working one. So I may compromise with a monitor instead.

I have no idea, CGIQuality might know. The only monitor I have is still 1280x1024 lol.
They were supposed to be coming this summer I think. Haven't seen any advertised anywhere yet.

Just... how though? the hardware is not designed for it, must be some strange workarounds to get HDR content streamed to the ps4, very odd.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Kerotan said:
So will this work through the hdmi or is it streaming content only?

Streaming content would still have to run through the 1.4 HDMI port.

OT:

Looks like it will be some sort of compromise HDR. Still, I have an awesome LG OLED and am very excited to see this on it.

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

So will HDR work for games on normal ps4 or what? I'm confused.
