Mario 113 34.14%

Mickey Mouse 218 65.86%

mickey by like 1000 fold.

for those saying he isn't in many cartoons lately you are forgetting his is basically the top franchise with young children. my 2 year old is obsessed with mickey and elmo. both are everywhere in kids clothing, books, toys, ect.

mickey = disney

if you know who disney is you know who mickey is.

don't get me wrong,.. mario is big and hugely reconizable. ...but tv/movie is much more mainstream than gaming and nintendo hasn't merchandised mario even a 10th as much as disney has merchandised mickey.

I'd say Mario. Only because I've honestly I rarely see Mickey these days in anything. My little nephews and nieces know Mario but don't know Mickey. So I dont think Disney's doing a good job marketing their main mascot anymore to the new generations.

It seems obvious for me that it's Mickey. Except maybe in a family of (Nintendo) gamers, but in a "normal" family the kids will watch Disney movies, want to go to Disney World/Land and get Mickey or Minnie plushies long before they even see Mario.

My brother in law is even a huge gamer but not a Nintendo one, my nephew and niece are huge fans of Mickey and Minnie (and Nemo, Simba, etc...) but never even heard of Mario. It could depend on the country too, I don't know, but I can't see Mario anywhere outside of the relatively small gaming world (compared to the Disney one). You're wrong if you think that Mickey or Minnie aren't in anything Disney is doing, they are everywhere in merchandising and contents made for kids : books, cartoons, plushies, school supplies, toys, even clothes...

And if we talk about the other side of the age chart, no doubt grandparents will know Mickey but not Mario (again, except the few who have been initiated to video games by their kids or grandkids). So overall, it's surely Mickey.

It looks like a question relevant only on a gaming forum, I bet a lot of other people would laugh at this debate ^^.

Both are completely tied (at least on places where videogames are not very rare)

Absolutely nobody xD

Yeah, I doubt a lot of people in Madagascar or India know Mario. You can bet they know Batman and Superman though.

You can't look at it that way.  Madagascar is just 22 million people.  That's the size of a small province in China.

If we were counting popularity by individual countries, Mickey would easily win given the numerous countries like Madagascar.

Though I agree overall that Mickey has the edge due to age and consitent relevance the whole time.

Massimus - "Trump already has democrat support."

I would guess Mario, cause there hasn't been any relevant MM thing in decades. Completely reduced to merchandise.
Would be interesting to see the results of an actual big poll!

Everyone I know, including children and parents know mickey, many don't know mario, sure, the once around my age do, but I've talked to many children from family members around 12-15 that just know the things on their smartphone and tablet, and never even played on a console or handheld :(

So I have to vote mickey, altough for me, since I was born in 1985 and we bought a NES when I was 1 year old and around 4-5 years I started playing it myself and really grew up with Mario, the italian plummer would be way more significant for me as a person ^_^

I'd say Mickey easily. Mickey Mouse is present in a lot of baby clothes, toys, blankets, etc so most children will know who he is very early on.

Signature goes here!

But:

So mushrooms make Mario less powerful in the fight against Mickey!

India has a population of 1.3B. Use that one as an example.

Mario as time goes by.
