Forums - Website Topics - A disturbing trend on VGChartz

I couldn't disagree more with most of what you've said. We only just got general discussion back and I for one think the forum is better for it. If you don't like it don't read it, it's not difficult. No reason to get rid of it and annoy the people who do enjoy it just because you can't not read something.

Don't worry, I can read and handle anything on this site. I just read some of the usual and predictable anti-refugee posts in one of said threads and went along without posting there myself, so it doesn't matter for me.

It matters for Arlo and others though as stated by them here. Suggestions like "avoid these threads" or "untick the politics section" (while most of these - for some people very unsettling - news are posted in general discussion) won't help them.

The issue now arises, for you guys to put all news into poltical therad, or general offtopic discussion must be ignored to deal with the new trend. Because I have the politics discussion unchecked recently myself.

By the way Arlo, I agree with your sentiment, given it does not reflect my actual view.

Just filter out Politics from your Hot Topics by unchecking the box.

Wish we could do that for the front page.

This is like saying, "There have been a lot of controversial threads on why pokemon go is doing well, it seems like people are just searching for good thread ideas to point farm and get replies".

Yes, in other news, water is wet.

The point of a thread is to post something worth while. Should we just not post when something happens in the world?

Well, Nintendo just closed down today, but I do not want any replies son I will not post it. That is basically what you are saying.

TL,DR

Just block the forum from your self so you do not have to see interesting threads.

We shouldn't, but honestly it shouldn't be on the front page if it's not about video games. While I usually roll my eyes when people what I'm about to say, this is a gaming site. If people want to talk about things that are superfluous to that topic, they should be willing to look for it. The site looks less focused when those kinds of threads run rampant.

I agree with Arlo completely, though not enough to consider leaving.

Unchecking topics doesn't change the front page though, right? That's what I'm talking about. When I come to the site I primarily look on the front page, and that's where it always comes up. It's not that I don't think anyone should ever talk about this stuff (which is ridiculous that anyone here thinks that's what I meant at ALL). It's that I come here for game stuff and I'm still hit with every murderous tragedy that befalls anyone ever. And no, not clicking the thread doesn't help, as it's all summed up in the title.

The Problem is that you get banned pretty easily here if you just post regularly and go a little off-topic, but as a thread creator you have immunity for almost everything doesnt matter how stupid your opinion and how baiting your thread is. The thread gets just closed in the worst case scenario.
This is probably one of the main reason why you see people making such threads because if they would talk about issues like that in a different thread it would be counted as bating, off-topic, derail >ban

I think we've all had stupid opinions/thoughts during our time here on VGChartz.

It's just a matter of whether you're open-minded to accept other people's responses, or if you're too much of an idiot to realize that it's possible to be wrong.

Most 'debates(AKA catfights)' take forever because people:

a) Always take things out of context

b) Use so many goddamn strawman arguments

c) Can't realize that everyone is wrong during their lifetime, and that accepting you're wrong doesn't make you an idiot. It just means that you were incorrect.

I consider what gets posted in the Nintendo section a bigger problem. The irrationality that is going on in there makes politics pale in comparison.

The worst thing is when you mention Paper Mario. The arguments are ridiculous.

Never thought someone could be so angry at you just for liking a game.

Do people actually point farm or intentionally try to make threads get replies?
I've never heard of anyone on this website care so much for the points.

I participate often in non-gaming related discussions, but you are right. This website was meant to discuss games and sales.

A lot of other gaming websites have a similar issue though. It's probably 60% gaming related threads and 40% other non-gaming related threads most of the time.

Worth asking Trucks if he can make that happen without it taking up too much of his time. I think the fact that it doesn't work for the front page was just an oversight the original site dev made when creating this version of VGC.

Can't you just click which topics you do and don't want?

Than this maybe should be something the site works on (to add filtering functionality to the front page), not something caught by mods so that less posts on these topics are written. In the meantime, just ignore. If being exposed to a sentence bothers you that much, than I don't know what else to say.

I agree, im here to talk about gaming and hardware. Everytime someone posts about religion or shootings etc it makes me want to take a step back from this sites. This is a gaming wetsite not MSN.

You have the option filter it out, like others have said. But you're hurt feelings nor anyone else's should never dictate what content goes on this site. Only the site's rules should.

On a side note, I don't know where you are from (I am American), but I feel a lot of Americans don't know much about world news. A lot of us don't care about things that are happening in politics or in our neighborhood, either. Ignoring information for the sake of ignorant bliss doesn't make all of these things go away, though.

With information comes power. Even if you decide to use those filters, if you ever want to get out of your bubble and learn about others, the news is a great source. Just don't let it give you a confirmation bias that everything in the world is bad. Reporting about kids birthdays, kittens, and rainbows doesn't make for interesting or educating stories.

I don't think he was burying his head in the sand more along the lines that he was well aware of current affairs, and that the constant media overloaded world we now live is enough and while we have had non gaming news of all kinds in the past, todays political and social  circumstances have lead to sharp increase in these articles, leading to some people feeling overwhelmed and feeling they can't get away from it. Still this story has a happy ending since those who would rather not see it can do just that now know about the filters.
