...how exactly did we come to the conclusion that there isn't a Metroid game being worked on at the moment, exactly? Not that I'm betting there is one, but I fail to see how Retro working on a game in 2014, and then something said in 2015, suddenly rules out the current development of any Metroid title at all (ignoring FF, obviously).

Simple fact. Nintendo could of said something about said game. To minimize Fed Force hate.

This is Nintendo we're talking about. The company that tried to monetize let's plays. Trying to project sensible consumer relation sense onto them is a hopeless endeavor.

can we just get some indie company to do it? shovel knight took over for the classic castlevania, freedom planet took sonic's place, and hopefully mighty #9 can get here soon enough to bring the megaman magic back

I think the dev that created "The Swapper" would be a perfect match for "Metroid V".

I've been thinking all this gen: why hasn't Nintendo utilized the smaller indie devs that they've been forging relationships with? Shin'en would be great for "Wave Race" (they've been begging Nintendo) and "F-Zero" (hello, "Fast Racing Neo"). Nintendo could fund titles with proven smaller devs and send a few trusted crew over to help and supervise development. Suddenly, Nintendo has more talented teams for smaller (2.5D, etc.) titles, and their major studios can set their focus on true AAA titles.

i think it could work, but fans would expect more from F-Zero after FRN, not just a simple palette swap or something. That would take a little more money, more manpower, and a little more time for an indie that has a staff in double figures. Sure great games can come from small teams, but I think fans want more from F-Zero than a simple return to form (granted I haven't played FRN and I'm not sure how much they'll have to build upon to reach expectations for F-Zero).

We could still get a 2D Metroid sooner and that would be so fucking awesome!

Nintendo doesn't care about the franchise and it's fans anymore.

Nintendo hates everybody because it hates itself, like Hitler. I wouldn't be surprised if they actually were a bunch of serial killers and if their games secretly spread chemtrails, Morgellons, Ebola, ISIS and Jar Jar Binks, not necessarily in this order.

June 2015

Cheers. Ok that's a very telling interview - he seems genuine about no game being in development at that time. I was certain Retro would be working on it already, since we don't know what they've been up to since Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze (or do we?).

So no Metroid before 2018, that's one down from the killer launch year lineup I was expecting for NX. Zelda will be cross release like TP was. 3D Mario might not make it for launch (holidays '16 will be 3 years from 3D World's launch, which is tight, considering NX is an all new system). Splatoon won't take as long, but still the original was too recent. Maybe Smash, surely not Mario Kart. 2D Mario will get a rest for some time, people are tired of it, and Mario Maker kinda reset the whole concept. Similarly 2D Donkey Kong seems due for a break. Maybe Pikmin, which doesn't move any systems though. Not Paper Mario, they just unveiled the Wii U game.

What else could they be working on? F-Zero, after the tease in MK8? A proper Animal Crossing?

Well, that's because the franchise just doesn't sell shit... So Nintendo is going to give up on it someday, like they did immediately after Super Metroid. The same thing almost happened with Fire Emblem until Awakening saved the series.

So that one game selling 2 million, saved the series. But all the Metroid games selling that or more. Even Other M. It's a failure.

Fire Emblem Awakening is the highest selling FE game ever selling almost 2 million copies with Fates tracking close in the same timeframe. Metroid Prime sold close to 3 million, while Metroid Prime and Other M sold under 1.5 million, Metroid Prime 3 sold close to 2 million, and Metroid Prime Trilogy just over 600,000. You need to take into account development costs between the franchises as Fire Emblem and Metroid with the latter having its most recent titles release on home consoles while the former released on handhelds.

Currently Playing: SSB: Ultimate Splatoon 2, LoZ: Breath of the Wild, & Fortnite

As long as it comes out as good as the other ones, that's all I care about.

It's Nintendo, they specialize in doing what the opposite of what their fans want.

Besides, I honestly don't think they know what to do with Metroid any more. The series represents everything modern Nintendo shies away from; it's dark, mature, and traditionally both technologically and conceptually ambitious. The Nintendo of today doesn't seem to have the guts to make the grim, gorgeous reboot the series is screaming out for.

So, I guess Xenoblade Chronicles X doesn't count, then? XD

That's nearly 10 million in sales from Metroid, with 3 games developed on the same engine and one being a re-release with updated controls.  The games more than cover their costs and profited, especially on a low install base on the GC and with a small audience for the series.  If the pitiful Star Fox can get a AA level game, they can definitely push the boat out with Metroid on NX.
