Forums - Gaming Discussion - HTC Vive is $799/€899/£689, Ships ‘Early April’

The HTC Vive will cost $200 more than its chief competition, the Oculus Rift. The $799 headset, powered by Valve’s SteamVR, will ship with a controller for each hand and a pair of “Lighthouse” laser base stations to track movement in a room-scale environment.

The price was announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where it was also confirmed Vive will ship with an internal microphone and integrated Bluetooth support to work with a variety of smartphones. For a limited time, the system will come bundled with two popular titles: Job Simulator and Fantastic Contraption.

Editors Note: Another publication broke the embargo on this information so we are matching what’s publicly available. Updates to come at 9 a.m. PST with quotes from Valve and HTC.

Haha... OK.

I'll take ten units.

It is cheaper than the 999 number some expected.

Well RIP HTC Vive.

That is actually cheaper than I was expecting. I also think it's way too early to say it's DOA. The Vive is not aimed at even the mainstream VR audience.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Steam just needs to stay the hell away from hardware and stick to selling games. lets face it, Gabe Newell is not the lord and savior of gaming, hes just a really good salesman

Well if Sony can come in cheap enough... I think it will clean up and set a positive path for them in the future.

The problem with these others is that they are dealing with PC's of varying performance, but it also seems they are trying to make the best hardware they can, but that comes with a cost. While making VR ok to begin with will be enough imho.

As tech prices reduce then they will be able to bring out further products, but right now they are going for top end, and thats not what the audience is ready for.

Well it's going to be like this for some years now, the tech is new, expensive and a market has to be built from scratch.

I don't think Sony can do a miracle and deny hardware-market laws. If Sony decides to go $399 for PSVR, it means PSVR is going to be heavily compromised VR-experience compared to competing products. But a lot of people do not seem to care, they only want to hop in to VR-train and anything will do, even if it actually meant inferior VR-experience.

I cannot imagine toilet-free life.

Kebabs have a unique attribute compared to other consumables. To unlock this effect you need to wolf down a big ass kebab really fast, like under 10 minutes or so and wait for the effect to kick in. If done correctly your movements should feel unbelievably heavy to the point where you literally cannot move at all.

What is an inferior VR experience.... You dont know how above and beyond the other two have gone...

You could buy all three VR products, use it and then complain they are all inferior... thats the problem with VR right now... it's early days, but I dont think people on the street want to pay $700 for one.
