Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Was the 2DS and New 3DS a waste of time for Nintendo?

In Japan it seems the New 3DS models offered a huge boost. Outside however it seems pretty pointless.

Not really, as of September 3DS was up YOY in the US based on NPD numbers. Also shipments for the last 3 quarters have been up YOY even outside of Japan. It actually had a similar effect in the west as it did in Japan.

I really doubted whether the 2DS was a good purchase at the time (Christmas 2013) but it has had as much usage as the 3DS. I guess the kids aren't really that interested in sound quality and the 3D feature anyway - they're just interested in playing the game. There's no squabbles about who has which device when they're playing multiplayer.

Can't comment on the new 3DS as we don't have one...

I was a day one owner of the original 3ds and I upgraded to N3ds xl. Wonderful device. Bigger screen, much better 3d, way faster load times and miiverse connection, and the c stick is awesome. I sometimes look at it and wonder if Nintendo can make a handheld this awesome again.

For Nintendo? No.
For consumers? Yes.

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Number ONE Zelda fan in the Universe

DKCTF didn't move consoles

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

2DS I don't think so because I know a lot of people who bought it because of how cheap it is.
New 3DS I feel was a giant waste, didn't really offer anything the regular 3ds XL did just improved FPS in MH and like 1 exclusive game

At this point, the 3DS and Nintendo could only do so much. It's an old console and pretty much most of the big guns have been utilized for the system (Mario, Smash, Kart, Zelda, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, etc.) and games like Fire Emblem and Kid Icarus have emerged as key titles along with third-party titles like Monster Hunter, Shin Megami Tensei, Devil's Survivor, Harvest Moon, Rune Factory, Etrian Odyssey, Dragon Quest, Puzzles and Dragons, Street Fighter, and Bravely Default. Thus, the other 3DS models provided new options for everyone.

Wait whut, what are consumers losing by Nintendo making more models? They only gain more options, which is only a good thing.

No, 2DS is good and cheap and the new 3DS is a great option for those who never owned the original, plus it has xenoblade

No, they account for 20% of 3DS's total sales, not that bad at all...

They were meant to be fillers to carry the system for a bit longer and I guess it worked out to some extent.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Nope, the 2DS is just a cheaper hardware alternative for a younger audience. The New 3DS is the standard late in the life, semi upgrade on existing material that which should have things that will go into Nintendo's next portable hardware.
