Yeah, I am not sure why people rank Empire Strikes Back so high. Is this some sort of conspiracy troll? The movie is not very good, probably the most boring of all the movies, it had a piss poor climax and the whole "I am your father" thing is cheesy as hell.

It's only cheesy as hell because everything has imitated it in the  nearly 35 years since it came out.  at the time it was absolutely huge.

But why is the movie considered good, especially today?

1. Force Awakens

With the exception of Kylo Ren and The Leader of First Order, everything else was better than the prequels and originals for me.

Better effects, better fighting, better acting, no Jar Jar, Implicit Jar Jar murder, kylo ren was actually good till he removed the mask, better protagonists

I'm sorry, but after looking it up I found out the planet that was destroyed wasn't Coruscant, so most likely Jar Jar is still alive.

: (

That drops it in between 3 and 4 for me.

Still a bit unsure where The Force Awakens lands. It was better than any of the prequels, but how it compares with the original trilogy is a different story.

1. Empire Strikes Back. Still the best in the series, strongest story, best character progression and many of the most memorable scenes.
2.-4. A New Hope, Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens. Similar in many ways, very strong in most aspects, but each has their own, different weaknesses.
5. Revenge of the Sith. Best of the prequels. Still contains a lot of what made the first two bad, but has much more good in it compared to Phantom and Clones.
6. Attack of the Clones. A few good things, but also contains easily the worst acting and dialogue in the entire series. The only ones who come out ahead in this movie is Palpatine and Obi-Wan, and only because of the talent of the actors in question.
7. Phantom Menace. Just mediocre all around. The soundtrack, the final fight with Darth Maul, and a few nice scenes are the only good things in it. Clones has worse stuff in it, but it also has some better staff, so it just barely comes out better than Phantom.

I have seen it yesterday. I will see at again soon, pretty sure. The funny thing is, even though I like Ep1 the least easily, I went to see it in theatres a total of 6 times (5 times originally, once in 3D a couple years ago). So yeah I'll go see it again at least twice more probably. I loved it, even though it played it safe with the plot, I get why it did. Liked the new characters; Rey, Finn, Kylo Ren, Poe, the perfect new droid BB-8, lot's of potential and Harrison Ford was amazing! He nailed it.

So yeah, I'm not sure yet how it'll fit in compared to the original trilogy because it needs some time to settle, but at least I'd say it was better than any prequel. I loved Revenge of the Sith as well though, considered it above Return of the Jedi for the longest time until I saw them again recently. I'd put Sith, the new film and Jedi in the middle category:

1: A New Hope
2: The Empire Strikes Back
--
3: Return of the Jedi
4: The Force Awakens
5: Revenge of the Sith
--
6: Attack of the Clones
7: The Phantom Menace

O_O

didn't see The Force Awakens yet, but.... seriously? why so much hate for The Phantom Menace?

clearly the best of all 6, epic soundtrack and action scenes, many characters involved, iconic Darth Maul and so on... should be no surprise that it's the highest grossing movie of the franchise, and 14th of all time worldwide

most importantly the movie that introduced Star Wars to the modern world and turned many young people into fans, yet fans hate it? o_O

Stilted acting, CGI overload, Jake Lloyd, weird pacing, too much talking and sitting, and of course impossible audience expectations.

I actually fell asleep the first time I saw it but I watch the whole series several times a year. I watched Episode I about a week ago and really, really enjoyed it. Mostly, I was looking for "Darth Jar Jar" moments but the movie really pulled me in.

You won't find me defending "Episode I" very often, but the CGI "overload" didn't really begin until AOTC. "Phantom Menace" still had a number of good practical effects.
